Default UK Bank will soon allow remote cheque deposits

Finally people will soon be able to deposit cheques remotely in the UK. This has been available for years in the US. I hear that banks will start to roll out phone apps around October this year.

That's because cheques are still used in the US. Not sure what on earth the point of it will be in the UK though, I can't even remember the last time I used a cheque, it was probably about a decade ago.

I believe UK Financial Institutions love cheques. When I sell shares and request a direct deposit into my UK bank account it never happens. They send a cheque to my overseas address and, by the time I've returned it and it's cleared, they get the interest on my money.

Old school here

On-line banking, bank machines/ATM's debt cards & credit cards - the world has gone mad.

Cash is 'King or Queen' & no 'Joker' about it. We use cash 99.9% of the time for everyday purchases & payments. Still, it's two cheques per year, we are still trying to find a way around that (soon)

The only thing is, I don't believe folks can book a flight, a hotel or rent a car without a credit card or pre-paid money type card (visa/mastercard)?

Anyone any thoughts on how to book a flight without having to use a credit/money card?

Same happened to me, or sometimes insurance companies will send cheques. I don't get them very often but they are a pain when I do receive them.

Citibank have told customers they will no longer allow customers to write cheques.

I see I last wrote a UK cheque in 2011; I only use a handful a year in the US.

I vaguely remember Hertz having some kind of cash deposit card and airlines will let you pay cash but you'll be charged for it. Don't really know much about either though. I'm the complete opposite and don't think I've used cash in over 2 years. I'd rather get my airmiles. I do seem to somehow use cheques fairly often here in Canada though. A couple of things I use only take cheques.

By using a high street travel agent (although these are rapidly disappearing in many countries).

I've been in the UK for the last 2 years now (well, almost). I don't have or need a UK cheque book. I do though have a French one, if you think Canada is old school look at France where you'll still see people paying for their groceries with a cheque.

I was thinking cheques may still be used to give to kids clubs, or sending in the post inside a card. Maybe paying someone that doesn't have a bank account.

It's not clear to me how writing a cheque to someone who doesn't have a bank account would serve any purpose.

ETA: My recently deceased FIL would send each of our sons a birthday card with $C50 enclosed, in cash. He'd order the cash from his branch of Barclays on the
High Street a fortnight in advance and pick it up in person. He did this every year from 1993 until 2016. Always $50. Now that was Old School.

Yes you can, or could in 2011 which was the last time I wrote a cheque out to cash.
