Default Stressed a little

Have to admit after nearly five years in Australia, moving back to the north of England is stressing me out a lot.

No job, no rental history, no references, approaching 50, on my own, no family in the UK, no friends in the UK and not lived in a shared house for over ten years...

Anyone else felt this way?

Its either Sheffield, Leeds or Newcastle for me, i arrive back in the UK on the 18th of October, just a bag of clothes, laptop and phone.

What would you advise me to do?

Book into a hotel for a week, identify rooms in houses, what has anyone else done on landing, i cannot make my mind up...

Thanks

I'll be in the same situation as you + 2 months (coming in December) to Newcastle/Sheffield/Glasgow.

I have some family in Erskine so I will probably stay there for a bit, I've looked into being a Property Guardian to get around the lack of credit history when I arrive, I have a mate who is living rather nicely for under 500 a month in a listed property.

If I can't get a transfer with my employer I'll settle with a call centre, most of them will take me on given my history.

Good luck !

We were in a very similar position in March. We took the decision to move back from oz after I got a job offer in the UK. But we only had 4 days to get back and not much in the way of money. I pre booked a couple of weeks in an Air BnB which was excellent. We didn't have much in the way of belongings brought back - a suitcase each which was mainly full of things for the dog such as his beds. But, 6 months in we have managed. We have everything we "need" though there are things we would "like".

We had no issues with the NHS or banks.

If you have a job offer it is easy to secure a rental with just one months deposit although salary has to be some high multiple of the monthly rent. As for jobs for the over 50s, not sure what your line of work is, but does seem to be more difficult. We have been back almost three months and my DH still struggling despite significant skills and experience and we are in Manchester. He is in telecoms.

It took me about six months to get part time work in my field and 1 year and 3 months to get a proper full time job. I'm 51. You have to work at it and you have to be prepared for disappointments. I'd love to paint a better picture but it's better to have the real story.

Yes it seems this way. Strangely enough i am 52 and have been fortunate enough to choose from offers, all of which have been professional roles with good incomes, but older women may not have it so hard or maybe it is just what i do for a living. Does seem to be harder for men...hopefully something soon for my other half as he is quite down, but then he has been made redundant twice in the past and this bothers him.

Looking at same situation in Newcastle area. Maybe Air BnB a good start.

You've come to the right place, Sign.

May I suggest searching/reading whofan63's threads? They're quite long, but relevant. Here are a couple to start with:

Hang in there, moving is quite a stressful experience, but I'm confident you will find something soon.
