Default Returning to UK with EU spouse June 2018

I think that this might just be a quick one:

- I am 60 years old, UK born and bred, working overseas since 2001 apart from 10 months June 2015 to April 2016 when I returned to UK for a brief period. I am drawing a teachers pension in UK
- My wife is 50 years old, Portuguese passport holder. My wife is from Goa and previously held an Indian passport. She changed to Portuguese passport about 4 years ago due to the stupid rulings that came in 2012. BTW we have been married 15 years

We both intend returning to the UK this June, 2018 permanently, to live/retire. We will both then be 61/51 years old (not that that makes a difference?)

We own our UK house outright and have substantial savings to supplement my teachers pension and to ensure we will not have to rely on public money.

I am assuming that, as she is a EU citizen, she will be able to remain indefinitely (I am also assuming any effects of Brexit on EU Nationals will not be in effect by June 2018).

Is anybody aware of anything which would spoil the party?

Thank You in advance

If you return before Brexit then you should be okay. However if you intend to be self-sufficient then your wife should obtain Comprehensive Sickness Insurance to ensure she has the right of residence to benefit from any future agreement concerning the rights of EU residents in the UK.

If the OP's wife starts working in the UK as a Portuguese national prior to Brexit, would she still need comprehensive sickness insurance?

No, but she would need to work for at least five years before qualifying for permanent residence, notwithstanding any deal that is done for EU citizens post-Brexit.

Would she have to actually work, or just be in the country? I will be retired and we will live off my pension and savings.

In that case your wife will require CSI - see post #3.
