should the OP have someone [a friend or relative] in the UK, then I suppose its possible to order the SIM on line from this end, to the person at a UK address, who could then mail it to Canada?

The alternative to worrying about hitting the tarmac with a UK mobile is a phone card. We buy ours online from zaptel.com.

If OP has relatives in UK then order a £0.01 SIM from Amazon.co.uk, there are many that will mail to USA. Then have a relative purchase minutes for carrier at local store and send pin to you via email. Soon as you arrive activate SIM using that PIN and you're good to go.
