Default Newly arrived in UK with question

Well, we finally got the Spouse visa for my husband and arrived in the UK about 10 days ago. A big THANK YOU to you all for your advice.

Can anyone tell me whether or not DH (with the new Resident Permit bio card) needs a National Insurance number (he's 78 and unlikely to work, but does he need one for tax purposes or anything else)?

We have an appointment at a Jobcentre some miles away on Wednesday this week and don't know whether to keep it or cancel.

Thanks in advance

No harm having an NI number.

If he wants to open an ISA (tax free savings or investment account), then he will need to supply his NI number.

+1
It can be useful to have.
Sometimes official forms ask for the NI number for identification.

Thanks for asking this - think we will get one for OH even though he will be retired.

Hi, I'm in a similar situation, my wife got her entrance clearance visa beginning August, we arrived in the UK together on 28th August, she already did the bio metrics in her home country now I'm stumped as what we need to do next, i cant say i saw any information on what to do after she arrived in the UK?

I tried opening a bank account for my wife, bank requests official correspondence with my wife's name and address on, they said normally a letter with NI confirmation is used. I contacted NI / Job center to make an appointment, but they advised my wife doesn't need one unless she intends to work.

My wife's entrance clearance expired after one month on 30th August, is she supposed to get a new visa?

Many thanks for any advice

Tell them she intends to look for part time work.

What do you mean her entrance clearance expired one month on 30 August?

If your wife entered the country with a spouse visa her initial visa is valid for 2.5 years.

However, her BRP (Biometrics residence permit) needs to be collected within 30 days of her entering the country. Has she done this? Where to collect it would have been stated when she went for the BRP appointment.

You are very late....... think you will need to re-apply for the BRP. Let us know what transpires when you go to the collection point.

Our Housing Association - and many others - uses the NI Number as a unique identifier for tenants. I am sure other organisations do the same.

We collected BRP from the post office today, the lady working behind the counter was very helpful and understanding.

I see on HMRC that my wife does need an NI in order for me to claim her tax allowance as she is not working.
