Default IT job market...Ottawa/London.

does anyone here have recent direct experience of the job market for IT in both london/south east and ottawa/ontario? I'm in ottawa and have been unemployed for five months and getting seriously disillusioned. Thinking of moving home if nothing comes up, but I'm not sure how in demand IT skills are in London right now. I know that there's obviously been a slowdown in last couple of years, same as most places, but when I scan through thejob bulletins there's seems to be more opportunities in london/south east compared to here...is this wishful thinking? Does anyone have recent experience to draw on of the job situation in ottawa/ontario compared to london?
Thanks in advance...
Jeff

Have you tried looking at the number of vacancies and salaries offered in London on job websites like Monster, Dice and others?

Such sites, especially specialist IT recruiting jobsites would give a good indication of how buoyant the IT market is in London.

Thanks NC penguin. Yep, I've been checking the job websites, and the market does seem a bit more bouyant than over here at the moment. Still no luck over here though.....

UK It job market is very bad

Rates have collapsed.
The Labour government have introduced a punitive tax called IR35 on freelancers.
Until last year companies were bringing in 15-20000 IT workers through a Home Office Fast Track Visa scheme for an imaginary skill shortage.
The FTV scheme has been temporarily halted but similar numbers are still being brought in under Inter-Company Transfers. ICTs occur when a company has a subsidiary in another country (India is a common location) and transfers workers from that subsidiary to UK.
There is a growing trend towards offshore IT development.
Many people in IT are looking for exit routes.
There have been various reports of at least a third of skilled IT workers are out of work.

Depends what you do! If you are a programmer/developer/ PC Support - forget it. Very poor rates, and little on the market (London rates as low as £10.00 - £15.00 per hour). Many of the agencies here are fabricating jobs and their treatment of potential applicants is apalling.

I live in the South East (near Brighton) and there is next to no IT work locally - some in London, Northern cities (Leeds, Newcastle) possibly more bouyant.

Hi Jeff,

What's your skillset? Good *nix skills are always needed - but contracting is way down. MSCE's are 1st line helpdesk droids over here right now. I've been chasing down a new job for four months and have only had 4 interviews - and I'm in the trendy SAN and storage sector.
London is still where the better money is, but then it's an expensive place to live and get to.

Have a look at http://www.jobserve.com/IT/Jobserve/ for some pointers.

Good luck - Tim

The IT sector in the SouthEast and London in the UK is a dead duck, there are so many people in this sector out of work you will cry and the ones that are working are feed up of being a permy on low rates.

I am not saying you have no chance that depends on your skills but it is difficult right now.
