Having lived in Manchester for 40+ years (Sale & Altrincham to be precise), I personally like Didsbury really nice bars/restaurants/delis, but wouldn't necessarily be so fussed about Chorlton or Withington (used to work at that hospital). Prestwich is further north, which again is very different.

You could look at Altrincham, Hale, Hale Barns, Wilmslow for the money you have too I would have thought - all very commutable into the city.

Appreciate the reply :-) - Great to hear all the different views

Looking at Altrincham. Hale, Hale barns etc. I feel they are a little too far out from the city centre. I know it could be a little tricky, but we were hoping to be within 3 or 4 miles away - Manchester or Harrogate.

We're feeling that Harrogate may be the better option. A lovely town with plenty to do, great schools, safe & only being a short journey away from Leeds & York.

We won't rule anything out though

then there are places such as ... Morecambe or Carlisle is also nice - hey, why not.

There are many nice, safe areas in & around North or West Yorkshire.

My suggestion is to find a central location in the area of interest & to rent for six months while you go house hunting

Best of luck
