I've read a few times here that it is sometimes quite a bit easier to rent directly from the owners of a property than through an agent. Can anyone tell me how to go about that kind of search?

I assume you are in the UK? I am Brit living in US for 30 years. I have rented about 5 houses in US using VRBO.com. I have never had a problem and stayed in some fantastic homes. Most of them in Cali. The owners of the homes need to do a good job as vrbo.com has forum for rating your visit so they all wants those 5 stars. Never tried renting thru agent figure there are fees that are not worth paying as I can it on my todd.

If you can only search online, try Gumtree and Spareroom.co.uk (although the latter is mainly for room rentals, you do find some whole house rentals on there).
