Default Drivers license

I did not obtain a british license prior to leaving Scotland 25 years ago, I do have a US license (been driving for 25 years) I cant rent a car while in Scotland because I have a british passport. What do i need to do to be able to drive when I visit home? I've read sooooo much on this subject but I cant get the info I need and car rental agencies wont let me drive so my American husband does all the driving while in Scotland.

Why does your British Passport stop you renting a car?

You should be able to rent a car and drive on your US driver license.

Why not get US citizenship?

That said, I don't recall having had to show a US passport when I have rented in the UK using my US DL.

Since i have a british passport they require a british license. The rental company's at Edinburgh airport have all given me the same run-a-round for years. I booked a car a few years ago in my name all was good until got to the rental counter and was asked for my passport, hours later I ended up taking the train!

Not interested in becoming a US citizen.

I've never heard of that! Loads of people on the forum have British passports but drive when visiting 'home' with a hire car/foreign DL. I'd try another company if I were you, sounds very unusual.

When I was last in the UK, September 2016, I used my British Passport with my US driver license at Manchester Airport car rental (I think it was Europcar) with no problems.

That sounds like a bullshit policy, use someone else. You shouldn't have any problems showing a U.K. Passport and US driving licence. I've been Canadian since birth but my partner has never had any issues with his UK passport and Canadian licence on probably 30 different rentals.

As everyone else says sounds like bullshit to me.

I have British passport and NZ licence and never had any problems hiring a car.

+1 I rented a car from Edinburgh airport in July 2015 using a Canadian license and a UK passport. That was the most recent of perhaps 40 times I'd done the same thing. (Not all from Edinburgh).

It's because they assume that as a British passport holder that you also have a GB driving licence. Emphasise that you never held a GB licence and that your US licence is all you have. If that fails then go elsewhere.
