Question Car insurance -retired

Hi

My mum is moving back from Spain to UK. She has 10 years no claims bonus however UK insurance firms don't seem interested in recognising it as it's from Spain.

The cost is sky high it seems, around £800. Can anybody recommend an insurance company for a 77 year old. Just tried Saga btw.

It seems to be something of a gamble for the elderly.
Obviously worth checking is Age UK.

I found good information here:

Car Insurance designed for the over 50s | Age UK

I know it seems high, but if no one will accept her Spanish NCB , then she is treated as a new client with NO NCB and in this case I don't think £800 is too bad. It will come down as she accumulates a new UK NCB. Have you tried using an insurance broker as these can often be better than going direct, especially for "unusual" cases? Oh, I've just done a quick calculation - my last UK premium, in 2013, without my 65%NCB would have been £940 and I was 70 then. When we moved here I had same problem in that no one would accept my UK NCB , but luckily premiums are a lot less - £130 fully comp for my current car.
don't forget that most countries insure the VEHICLE whereas the UK insures the DRIVER. As I say, try some insurance brokers.

Unfortunately saga/age UK no good at all.
After a day on it a broker recommended Aviva, who recognises NCD's outside UK, insurance is now less than £400.

Part of the problem is that, at 77, she is well into the phase of life when the risk of having an accident increases again, and even then the risk is flattered because elderly drivers usually drive markedly fewer miles than they did just a few years previously. So fewer miles and despite that an increased risk of an accident.

Check my previous post, when the insurance company recognised the no claims, the premium went down by over 50%.

The entire problem it seems to be is most UK insurance companies (well except one at least) not recognising EU no claims which I find ridiculous.

Of course the issue will be resolved after Brexit when everybody's premium will go up 100% probably more ho ho

We have Aviva for our car insurance and will be recommending them for our son when he comes back from the USA in September. ( His current insurance company will provide proof of no claims )
