Question Working in the UK for a couple of weeks

Hi all,

I've been asked by my Dubai job to support the London office for a couple of weeks in June.

Will this have any effect on my tax-free status? Am I right in thinking you can only work in the UK for a maximum of 30 days a year as an expat?

Cheers!

The easy answer is 90 days...... but this reduces for each 'connection' with the UK you still have. Connections can be a house, dependents, sports clubs etc.

There's a good flowchart here, which should let you work things out for your own particular circumstances.

As the flow chart illustrates .... if you leave the UK and are employed full time overseas connections are irrelevant.

Days in the UK are not the same as days working in the UK. Work for 90 days and you lose your non-resident status!

Beware of posters who are not in possession of the facts as you have been given incorrect answers.

You may work for up to 40 days per tax year before your status is affected. Clarified here:

I'm glad I've checked as there is a lot of misinformation out there!

of course, what you declare on your tax form as days in the UK and how much you actually spend their working are two different things. I vaguely recall that you also have to work more than 4 hours for it to be deemed a "day".

Then it's years since I've worked anywhere. Does that mean I can claim tax back from somewhere? Or better yet, swan off back to the UK before Brexit and lord it off benefits?

I've technically never worked a day in my life then.

Which means I have 7 minutes until I've hit my 3 hours for the day
