Default Single male moving to Oman

Hi guys,

I am looking at a contract offer to work on some land drilling sites in Oman as the site safety advisor.

The contract, though a little thinner on detail than I expected, covers all the bases.

I would appreciate any advice on accommodation and locations if anyone is willing please?

My routine will be 2 weeks in the desert (Yibil, approx. 4 hours drive from Muscat so I'm told) then 1 weeks leave at where ever I decide to live. The main company HQ is 30 minutes south west of Muscat.

Being single and ex-military I'm very flexible and able to work about many unexpected circumstances and my aim is to live simply and cheaply.
I am ideally looking to share accommodation with someone, either multi-occupancy or rent a room, as long as its not too far from my reporting place of work.
For me this will/should reduce my front end cost of relocating and the hassle of organising utilities and the up front years rental costs (no help from the company on this one)

The company has single accommodation at Jifnain for 160 OR/month (ideal), although my google search has given me 2 places east and west of Muscat. This leaves me not able to plan ahead of my commuting costs and distance to shops/restaurants etc or what else is in the general area (is it right next door to a loud Mosque? absolutely no offence implied, I just value sleep and unclogged roads on a Friday).

If anyone has some good sound advice on good/bad areas, web sites, recommendations I would greatly appreciate it.

Many thanks,

Monty

Arse end of nowhere mate

160/month will get you nothing. Maybe an illegal flat share with some Indians in Ghala.

You're being screwed

If you check out better homes web site (oman.bhomes.com) you will get a good idea on prices.

But as per previous post - mate, you are being screwed. Those terms are not acceptable. Al Jifnain is a workers camp, probably. No disrespect to the workers, but you do not want to be living there. Ex-military or not.

You can find decent villas in town and share with a few blokes.

Jifnain is an area where many quarries crushers are located, it is about 30 min from Seeb, and 45 min from Muscat. It is a non populated area, that would be unsuitable for living. Best to search in the Seeb area or even Uzeiba, Al Bowshar for nice flats.
