Moving to Abu Dhabi, advice needed!
Hello,
I am a Vietnamese oil men expat and will move to AD on August. I am seeking information and advice about life and work in AD and Google led me to this forum. I hope to have your help for my concerns. Many thanks in advance.
1. Racism: I read a thread about UK Indian and wonder if this could happen to an Asian like me in UAE. As far as I knew, just very few Asian working in AD, especially a Vietnamese.
2. Apartment: I will need a 1 bedroom apartment for first 6 months coz I will relocate alone to find out how the life is before moving my whole family. I have a wife and 2 kids, 1- 5 yrs and 1 - 1yr. Which area should I rent an apartment and which area is suitable for my family. I would like to send my daughter to a British school next year. I searched Dubizzle and also contact some agents for more detail. What's the deal normally like? My office is in Khalifa Bin Zayed street.
3. How about food? I would prefer Asian fresh food? Do they serve it in restaurants? Cost of living for 1 guy like me and whole family?
Your responses are much welcomed.

1) Racism is endemic in this society unfortunately. You will need to grow a thick skin and just learn to ignore it. The food chain goes something like:
1. Saudis and Emirati Arabs
2. Other Gulf Arabs
3. Other Arabs
4. North Europeans, North Americans, Aussies, Kiwis etc
5. Other Europeans
6. Latin Americans, Japanese, Korean, other Far Eastern (except Philippines)
7. Higher Caste Indians, Filippinos
8. Lower Caste Indians, Pakistani and Sri Lankans
9. Nepali and other South Asians
10. Kenyans, Ethiopians
10. other Black Africans
2) Most landlords will insist on a 12 month lease on an apartment. It may be worth looking at a serviced hotel apartment for a short-term rent. For schooling, there are some good British curriculum schools here but places are in high demand and you need to apply early.
3) There are literally hundreds of Asian eateries and restaurants in Abu Dhabi, ranging from the very basic take-away up to expensive top class restaurants. There is a Vietnamese restaurant on Elektra (7th Street), just before Tourist Club Area. Check Time Out Abu Dhabi for more details.

I don’t know much about AD, but in Saudi racism is a problem. White Saudi’s don’t like non-white Saudi’s for some reason.
