I've been offered a job in Ras Tanura
Hello All
I have been offered a job with the ITQAN College near Ras Tanura. This is an unaccompanied post which is not a real problem as I intend to Skype, visit etc etc. I do have a few questions though.
1 - Tax, I've been doing a bit of digging and this is a minefield, maybe I'm overthinking this so can someone simplify it for me please. I'll be going from October to October.
2 - My wife wants to visit over xmas and new year I take it she will need some sort of visa?
3 - I have to get my own accommodation which they give me an allowance for. Is this the nom?
4 - What advice would you give to someone going out for the first time.
Any help with this lot would be great.
Cheers
Jock

Business Visa or Work Permit ? If a business visa then your wife cannot visit.
They are leaving you to sort out rental ? Not acceptable. How will you proceed in getting a place ?
You need to be out for a full tax year to benefit from a tax-free stay. If you are there for 12 months over two different tax years, you could end up paying tax to UK Taxman.

Hi Scot47
I've asked about the permit/visa, will not be happy if this is the case.
As to the rental it now appears they put you up in a hotel for two weeks and in that time point you toward rentals.
The tax thing scares me to death, I know its tax free out there but what happens when I come back? I'll need to dig deeper I think.
Cheers

From what you've posted, October to October, you'll remain liable for full UK tax and NI since you don't complete either tax year working overseas. Best to leave the UK on or shortly after 6th April with an employment contract ending after 5th April the following year.

PWC have a March 2013 online brochure - 32 pages - called UK Tax Residency Rules. Easy to find. Seems you would need to be in UK less than 91 days in the tax year April 2016- April 2017 or April 2017 - April 2018 to have any tax benefit.

I haven't been in the UK longer than 5 days in the past 3 years. But how would they know that? Unless I tell them, can you just lie?

I once sent an email to Customs and Immigration asking if they had a record of people coming in and out of UK. I think they must surely do that because of terrorism. But I got no reply.

Also the airlines have to keep a record of their list of passengers for a certain time.

They'd just pop you a tax return form in the post, which you are legally obliged to complete in full and return. Criminal offence otherwise.
