The postives are the money, hence why if its not bloody good, dont come. Recce means a look see visit. Abr reconnaisance.
There are several expat groups and clubs, depends what your thing is really. Families tend to get more of their social group things going from compounds and work friends though.
There is certainly stuff you need to do and see if you do visit though, and certain times etc that you have to go out to see the worst of it. Never would I have known that parking in a mall in the evening would rival Watford Harlequin a week before Christmas .. for example!

I met a scottish women in the Mega Mart a few weeks ago, we got talking about where to get Weetabix that week. She told me the Family Food Centre on Airport road had been redone (since I had been) and was looking all modern, suggested I go take a look and then added with a wry smile ... what exciting lives we lead in Doha
It depends what you want out of life. Most folks I know are on short stints, have old priced villas or are on the way home.

Okay, that's 37,500 a month.
I'm not happy here for multiple reasons so I always sound negative on the board, but no other Brits really post on here from Doha and it's hard to gauge sound feedback from QatarLiving because so many asian expats have no concept of coming from Europe.

I only could suggest to the original poster ... do not uproot the kids except you guarantee seat for the school in Doha. I have met few families than been here over 3 months and the kids still havent got space in any school.

Something else you might want to bear in mind is that once you're resident in Qatar, you are not free to leave the country on a whim - you have to get your sponsor's signature on an exit permit. It may seem like a small thing, but to my mind it's a quite significant restriction on personal liberties.
The latest news i hard they reduce the 2 yrs ban to 6 mths.

However, if you post a salary like this on that board everyone is likely to tell you its fantastic and in real terms when faced with setting up here now, its not, especially if this guys on a 50-60k gross package already. Hence the comment only he knows what his net gain is going to be.

People from QL are most definitely mixed nationailites .. but .. the simple fact is that most people argue finances from the perspective of Asian wages, not European. The mindset is completely different. That said, everyone bitches from their own point of view because it has become expensive for everyone relative to what they earn.

Not if I am on line with QL.
Besides, we always ask where the person asking the question is from. If he is Western, he will be told by all, including the Asians, if his "package(love that term, lol) is ok.
Even the Asians and Arabs there know what Westerners make
Oh, I just came back from a QL outing, we were about 60 people of mixed nationalities, we actually talk to each other, we even got along!
About meeting people at your compound, hmmm, don't know , most of them a pretty stuck up, they must by now have forgotten about council houses.

I only can suggest that the original poster should go to QL and post the question him/herself. And see how the mix nationalities of people in QL 'bitches from their point of view'. Oh dear dear me ...

I dont live on a compound myself, but several families I know do and they, and their kids particularly socialise *mostly* with neighbours, I guess it depends where you live and what your attitude is. The few I know dont strike me that way. It's also an observation I have read many times. The single people I know in company villas on compounds tend not to.
Not living on one, I really wouldn't know whether people are snobbish or not, or what their backgrounds are. There is enough variety around the city that I doubt one stereotype is anywhere near as accurate as stereotyping ever is.
If you are trying to imply with the 'eek', that I don't think the westerners can get along with anyone else your you have completely misinterpreted my comment. We have asian, middle eastern, european, african, american and australian friends here, some of whom are also members of QL.
None of that however, detracts me from my original statement that I will stand by, over the years of reading I think the information on that site tells more of one side of the story than the other, and that, is what I am trying to bring to Siraj's attention. It's a bit like going in the Barbie.
It's my opinion, if you disagree so be it, I know it's not a lone opinion from discussions I have here though.
