Re: Flight Prices
People who have more time on their hands than I do:
What about taking a cheap FlyDubai flight or Air Arabia or Air India to India, and from India to Japan on a proper airline? All heading in the same direction so no criss-crossing over Saudi (I feel like very time I fly over Saudi I lose a year of my life).

Re: Flight Prices
i haven't used any other airline other than emirates since i moved out here (9 yrs and counting) - although they are over priced compared to other airlines i
1. love the convenience of flying direct - cannot stand stopovers, unless absolutely necessary ie no airline flys direct
2. prefer emirates in flight entertainment package
3. always get to book my seats well in advance of my flight and hence always guaranteed a window seat (although i realise the gits are now going to charge for pre-booking your seat)
4. despite people saying their service is not good, every time i have flown with them i have never had anything to complain about

Re: Flight Prices
BA varies on the planes they use. If a newer one the experience is comparable to Emirates and I like their premium economy class. Flying into T5 at Heathrow is a nice bonus Media package isn't as good as Emirates or Qatar but still decent enough and leagues better than even five years ago. And I prefer T1 at Dubai to Emirates' T3. There's a Pret!
I've noticed many people regardless of the airline are now downloading films on their iPads and watching them on the flights.

I used to put Emirates on a pedastal too. They used to be very good and not too much more either. Now they are silly money for a similar service. I'd fly Etihad every day of the week before Emirates, Virgin too. Mostly though I fly KLM or BA. KLM are decent but BA is well..... BA. But at least they're cheap.

Re: Flight Prices
1. err most carriers from Dubai do not fly direct cross Atlantic for eg if you wanna fly from Dubai to the States and you pick BA or Virgin you will be going via the UK
2. so there are other airlines with heaps of choices of films, tv series, documentaries etc?
3. err you can only do that 24-48 hrs prior to your flight, not well in advance of your flight
I have previously flown with BA, Virgin, United, Air India, Air Canada and granted i haven't flown with any of them in past 9 yrs but i can't see them being any better service then emirates - and when we talk about service what exactly do you mean? For me it's as simple as the air stewards coming to your assistance and sorting you out.

Re: Flight Prices
There was an argument to be made a decade ago that Emirates was heads and shoulders above the other international carriers in terms of quality of the flight experience. Food, media package, seat comfort, reliability, baggage handling.
Nowadays, the other major airlines have really improved their game (BA and Virgin are two great examples, though still a bit of a hit or miss), and Emirates have also slipped slightly with cuts to their services.
There is a virtue to paying extra for direct flights if you don't like layovers, but otherwise the same direct journey between Emirates and, say, BA to London you're paying almost double most of the time for a not necessarily better flight experience. Emirates to Singapore or BKK is always more expensive than the same flight on Singapore or Thai, yet the quality isn't better enough (if at all) to justify the price differential.
I find Qatar best value for the very long haul (USA, Australia) if you're willing to accept a short layover in Doha that adds at most 3 hours altogether to the journey but at a savings of multiple thousands AED. Qatar has a better baggage allowance than Emirates and don't charge for seat bookings in advance.

1. err most carriers from Dubai do not fly direct cross Atlantic for eg if you wanna fly from Dubai to the States and you pick BA or Virgin you will be going via the UK Well to be fair you didn't mention any destinations now did you? Do Etihad not do transatlantic?
2. so there are other airlines with heaps of choices of films, tv series, documentaries etc? Yup, most if not all of them. Technology has come on a lot in 9yrs!
3. err you can only do that 24-48 hrs prior to your flight, not well in advance of your flight Why would you want to do it anymore than 48hrs before? You still get a choice then. Also, i'm sure you can, well if BA do then I'm sure others do too. Although I think with BA you need to pay.

Emirates lost its spark a few years ago now, hence why the business is suffering. On the other hand most others have raised their game. TBH the best flight I have ever had was on Virgin. I've never been sorted out by a stewardess on a flight tho..... once nearly but we waited until we got to the hotel

If you haven't flown with anyone other than Emirates then you've never been to T1 have you? At least the new T1 that opened more than a year ago?
It's nice. It's shiny. It's bright and airy. Compact and central with a good selection of restaurants. And Pret

Re: Flight Prices
in all fairness - i did once fly with Singapore Airlines - that was an awesome flight due to 2/3 of the flight being empty. For me personally if i can have the seat next to me empty...then it's going to be a fandabidozi flight

Flying with Etihad means you have to get to abu dhabi - hence not direct in the true sense of the word
