A few questions about moving from Doha to Dubai

Re: A few questions about moving from Doha to Dubai
Thanks Millhouse. I never thought of Airbnb as an affordable option for a long-term lease, so I will definitely give it a look!
carcajou, I am in the process of moving out my money. As I am based in continental Europe, I was waiting for the Euro to go down (it's the highest I remember it in my 2 years here), but I will wait for a more fortuitous moment to convert to EUR. I agree it is odd that I keep my money in Qatar!

I have to say that I am another one who has accumulated a significant amount of cash onshore here. I should say that it is not my main savings but has grown to a tidy amount largely through negligence and the fact that I don't spend much. There is clearly a risk attached to this, though I think that can be over-stated. On the other hand, where else will you get 1.5 to 2% on an unrestricted pure cash deposit account?

As a self-described "homebody" with that profile name I can only imagine you have a colourful internet search history. I'm not sure what the situation is in Qatar but plenty of internet stuff, including some random unexpected things, are blocked here in the UAE. There is lots of info and opinions elsewhere on this bored about VPNs but just be sure, whatever your living set-up is, especially if it is sharing, that your, um, needs can be accommodated....

Holding in Qatar Riyals is not a good idea. I had a colleague in Saudi who kept all his savings in Saudi Riyals in a bank account in Saudi. He left on vacation, and could not get back within the period of his exit/re-entry visa. He never managed to return to Dhahran and his 5 years of savings are still in a bank account the he cannot access.
Qatar may ne a bit easier in terms of entry and regulations but this does illustrate the perils of holding in exotic currencies in exotic locales.
