Dubai - Buy or rent property?

Re: Dubai - Buy or rent property?
There is something very stressful about Dubai commuting. Give me 40mins drive in the UK with some traffic and lights, to 40mins stop-start-cut you up- beep-accelerate hard-brake-stop-watch car rear end you-start-stop type traffic in Dubai.
My daily commute to Mirdif takes anywhere between 40mins and 1hour in the evening. The record is two hours for a journey that should take no more than 18mins. It's not exactly fun.
But of the options you have described mirdif is the nicest. Just don't expect to want to go out again once you have got home.

@ Millhouse - Yes I can imagine the driving and people not having the patience. Guess after driving for a week, I will turn a crazy drivers like the rest of them.
@ Cypselos - I will bear your calculation of 30 dirhams. I got an initial quote for renting a toyota yaris. Its 90dhs/day. Didn't realise it was that expensive for a very basic car.

What's the term of the rent? On a months lease You ought to be getting something more like a Civic or a Jetta for that money, so at least a category or two up.
I mean 30 dhs each way, so a total of 60 dhs to get to and from work.

you should be asking for a monthly / weekly rate from them rather than a daily rate and if they say that oh we dont do monthly rates or just multiply it by 30 then you are talking to the wrong people. Just look up monthly car rentals on dubizzle / olx and pick and choose. Having said that the cheaper it is, the less service you can expect like road side assistance etc but pfft!

Decent blokes, never any hassle, I regularly paid late because I forgot, when it broke down they just came and replaced it. Not sure what they're called but I can draw them on a map if you need, or take you down there when you've arrived if you like.
Hired on UK licence, photocopy of credit card as deposit. Drove away in minutes.

I know a place in the back of Al Quoz that will do a Lancer(ghini) for 15-1700 a month. Just nip in each month and pay for it, salik and any fines.

Re: Dubai - Buy or rent property?
It was my mistake. The 90AED cost was a daily rate and have now got the weekly and monthly rate which comes down to 53AED per day if I lease for a month.
If I will be arriving into Dubai through a work permit, can I still drive with a British license from day 1? I have been informed I may need to transfer the license if this is the case. Whereas if I enter the country on a visit visa, driving with a UK license is fine. Does anyone know if this is correct.
@Scamp - I will contact you closer to my move and obtain the information.

Transferring your UK license is simple, but you need a non-objection letter from your employer and visa plus Emirates ID must be in progress (and maybe even finalised).

Re: Dubai - Buy or rent property?
You don't need an NOC letter if your job title on your work permit includes 'Manager' apparently. I took one anyway to be on the safe side, but they didn't even look at.

That's perfect. I will check with the rental company.
Even though its a management position, the job title doesn't state Manager on it. I've got a bad feeling about this

Re: Dubai - Buy or rent property?
It would be written on your visa page. Sales person or Manager etc. For the manager visa they need a bachelors qualification, so if you provided an attested copy of your bachelor's degree then it's probably a manager visa. Having said that, the package that you mentioned, it probably is one.

@ Irishbeekeeper - Yes, I have uploaded a copy of my degree certificate on the company portal and hope it will state Manager on the visa page. Thanks for the advice.

I would recommend you talk to their HR and find out what do they plan on putting on your visa before you move.

If it doesn't say Manager it's not the end of the world. They'll give you a letter to get your license changed over. Easy.

Re: Dubai - Buy or rent property?
I emailed HR and they responded saying this position will be stated as a Marketing Specialist. They said this is better than a sales designation as I have provided a degree certificate.
Should I push for a Manager designation? How will it impact me in the future if I don't have a Manager designation? If i was to settle and have a family, would it affect their status?
Thanks.
