Assistant Professor offer at PMU...should I?!
Hi all.
Just received an "offer" from PMU. I'm keen to get some overseas teaching experience, have been to KSA and many regional nations, very familiar with it all. My question concerns the "offer", in particular the salary...here are the broad strokes:
- two yr contract;
- assistant professor in humanities/social sciences;
- $18,000SR/month;
- paid housing (no specifics re location or utility costs);
- $600SR/month transportation allowance;
- medical insurance (not sure if dental/vision included);
- round trip airfare to job and on annual holiday;
- paid 60 day holiday;
- bonus of 1/2 of one month salary paid end of contract;
That's about it. The salary seems low. I've 5+ years undergrad (1 year graduate level) teaching exp, multiple published articles and two monographs. Should I negotiate (within reason)? Do they entertain counter-offers? I'd hate to scare them off, but my gut says they'll do better. Pay scale says this salary is near the top 70% of earners for same position in KSA, so maybe I'm just being unrealistic?
Thoughts, insights, suggestions, all most certainly welcome.
Cheers,
Frankie

FYI I hold a PhD, MA, BA, and have 9+ years exp doing applied research (on top of the teaching exp).

$18,000SR ?
I think you mean
18,000SR
PMU is okay. Kids from rich families. KFUPM is better ! I visited PMU several times when teaching up the road at KFUPM and attended seminars there. Very high-tech teaching environment.

Thanks, Scot, appreciate the insights. And yea mate, 18K SR. Is this a solid offer, based on my specifics; and are offers in general up for negotiation (within reason) in KSA?
