It's competitive to a certain specific demographic and skill set , just like every other single job in The Gulf.

Exactly. You're hugely overpaid for example.

Similar question, trying to see if my family of four can live comfortably on 370k AED. No other benefits provided except healthcare and I will pay cash for a car (so no car payment).

Schooling is important and I think it will cost 100k AED for both kids which leaves 270k AED for everything else, which is only 22.5k AED/mo:

1. Transport: 1.5k AED/mo for fuel, maintenance/repair, parking, tolls, and insurance (for one car...which wife will drive, my cab exp. paid for by work).
2. Rent: 15k AED/mo for 2-bed flat in "good" but not excellent area
3. Utilities/Other: 6k AED/mo for DEWA, food, mobile phone, essential clothing (esp. for kids) & miscellaneous bills
4. Nothing left for anything "extra" such as kids sports/music activities, trips, vacations, eating out, etc.

But, in addition to annual inflation increases, my annual salary is supposed to go up by 150k after two years so maybe it's worth the short-term sacrifice?

Also, my net "disposable income" after accounting for the lack of taxes but the higher cost of living will be the same for me as it is now. So there is no benefit or loss financially in the short-term. But there is a significant "potential" financial benefit in just 2yrs (~60% chance I'll get the promotion) and then there is the personal and professional development for me as well as the "international experience" for my family.

Thanks in advance!

Short answer No. Longer answer, not really.

Hmm, that's what I was afraid of. At this point my wife is trying to see if she too can get a job there. Seems that she could get around 250k AED/yr (right now she makes 120k AED/yr after taxes).

If so, then she'd be able to increase our net disposable income right away by 130k/yr and then I have a decent chance of bringing it up by another 150k/yr in 2yrs. Not sure if that's worth all the sacrifices of moving to Dubai....though then we could still argue about the "international experience" factor.

1. Transport: 1.5k AED/mo for fuel, maintenance/repair, parking, tolls, and insurance (for one car...probably about right, depending how far from school you live, if not far then reduce this.
2. Rent: 15k AED/mo for 2-bed flat in "good" but not excellent area Wow, for 15k I'd want a ****ing awesome 2 bed. Which you'll get. Where are you working?
3. Utilities/Other: 6k AED/mo for DEWA, food, mobile phone, essential clothing (esp. for kids) & miscellaneous bills Dunno, sems light. I spend 2,000 on DEWA + TV + Internet + A/C for a couple. Another 2,000 on food shops...so 6k for family of four seems light?
4. Nothing left for anything "extra" such as kids sports/music activities, trips, vacations, eating out, etc.

The problem with future promises is they are just that. Future options and not guaranteed. DOn't rely on it, don't make the decision to come here even considering that, or inflation based increases in salary.

I'll be working in DIFC but will need frequent access to the airport. I'm really hoping we can get the Dubai English Speaking School but, if not, we hope to have the kids at one of the good Jumeirah area schools (near Safa Park).

Since this is a big move and I've heard driving in Dubai is rough, I want to live as close as possible to school and to any places where the kids might have to go for extracurriculars (football/hockey/music/theater classes).

I would love to be able to save some money on rent and I'm trying to be frugal by going w/ a 2-bed, but I don't want to sacrifice safety, convenience, and I want at least a partially decent view nearby...with the kids being able to get out and have fun in a nearby park, etc. That's why I've allocated 180k, even for just a 2-bed.

Have a look at where I live - Executive Towers in Business Bay.

2 beds are probably 140-160ish. Massive, most will have a decent view, 5 mins to DIFC, 10 mins to Safa park.

If not that, look at anything in Downtown for options to live. Or around Safa there might be small townhouses etc to try.

You have a raft of choices on 180K to be honest , take your time and see whats relative to you when you get here . Not everything ticks the box but there's more than enough cash there to get something decent .

Are you two suggesting that 30k for a family of four is enough?

180k for housing maybe OK, but what about the rest of it. 30k isn't enough.

Nope, not at all. Told him everything is light and not to rely on possible future promotions.

No, you won't. Don't try and sell yourself on if's and but's. The simple answer is it will not be possible on your numbers..
