I was considering a move to the general area, maybes VA Beach, Norfolk or Chesapeake ..........I know its a very generic question but are living costs reasonable and employment decent ? Trying to get a feel for the place...

I'd say it hasn't been hit as badly by the recession as some other places. Wages aren't so high, though. It really depends where you are coming from in relation to house prices. It's more expensive than North Carolina but cheaper than the DC area.

The one thing I cannot handle is the heat down in Southern Virginia, especially in the Cheasapeake.

We are up in the far North Shenandoah Valley and it's a really good cost of living. However, employment (if you want $40K+) involves a b.s. commute into Loudoun & Fairfax Counties (about 40 miles drive each way).

Nothing is perfect, but I still love Virginia the best ... for now.

Hiya,

Just found this site.....whoo hoo....just came back from a 3 month stint in England..and am sooooooo homesick now.

I've been living in the Norfolk/Virginia Beach area for 20 years (give or take).....I like my trips to DC (Ikea)...

Don't feel alone....we are here!

Im in Southern California. Looking at VA generally, I think for my line of work Richmond would be best actually, as there is a lively insurance scene there.

Never been there though, Im told folks are friendly and thats very important to me. I need to jump on a plane and just go take a look around I think but if anyone has any advices for me that would be great.

If you have any specific questions, I can help. Some people love Chesterfield county, others love Henrico county! If you want a small-town experience, then give Ashland a look.
