Default Move from UK to GCC

Hi all,

Thanks in advance for viewing this post and really appreciate your view on this. all of my professional network is in UK and EU and none in middle east and hence I thought to ask this question over here.

Currently, am based in London and working in accountancy field. I am thinking to Move to GCC. However, I am not sure what is the best way for searching a job in GCC.

Since 3 months am actively applying for relevant jobs on the usual job portals like linkedin, bayt.com, gulttalent.com etc however, so far I haven't heard back from a single recruiter . Usually, in London I got at least 50% to 60% response from the recruiters. So I am wondering if you might be able to provide any tips/guidance for below:

1. Are there any agencies in London who are specialised in GCC recruitment.
2. Should I keep looking job from UK or its a worth taking risk by leaving the current job or book 3 weeks or long annual leave and come to dubai for job search?

What kind of accountancy?

Most accountants I know of in the UAE are primarily South Asians with some East Asians thrown in. At the lower level you find Filipinos and they can be excellent number crunchers.

Absolutely do not quit your job and come to the UAE on a lark.

Your best bet is to just keep hammering at recruiters and looking at in-house roles via the big firms. But depending on your accountancy niche you may not have much chance anyway. The UAE is one of those economies where entire job specialities and professions are dominated by certain nationalities.

Are you able to call yourself a "finance manager"?

Thanks DXBtoDOH for replying on my post. My current job title is Head of Commercial Finance. So am applying for FD/HoF sort of positions.

Tough times here for sure, companies are shredding staff, not hiring, at least at my field. Stay where you are and see what will happen in year or two or look outside GCC.

Depends on the type of accountant. If you are just a ACCA, ACA bean counter then forget it - your job will be done by indians. If you are a CFO, or able to add value beyond the bean counting (more like a CIMA type) then you have a bit more of a chance. Maybe with the VAT you will be able to find something at the Big 4 (which are all terrible)

If you are in product control in London then you will struggle as these jobs are not wide spread here.

I interviewed here about 18 years ago as a reasonably newly qualified accountant for a small private office. These guys are more likely to take on western accountants - the larger corporates will be using Indians.
