40k is too low mate.

On a strict pay grade that I have to work to for Qatar;

18 years (assuming this is post grad) with a Masters, with a Chartership = 45-60 (at a massive push).

Realistically you should be tickling / breaching 50.

Hang on.... 1970DUB and 'Ye'...that makes you sound Irish. In which case 40,000 a month will get you, roughly 800 pints of Guinness a month.

You can't live on that mate, you'll starve.

Many thanks for replies so far?
If you consider it a good offer (best for 13 months) and your wife and kids are going to stay at home for the next year then take it and get your feet under the table in the GCC. Out of 40,000 you will need +14,000 to live. Leaving + £4000 tax free (assuming you stay until April 2014) to send home each month.

Byrne Looby might be a good option should I need to get back to
Ireland in a few years. Just want to keep all options open.
Other active players out here in your field are Atkins, Parsons Brinkerhoff, Parsons International, KEO, CH2MHill, COWI, AECOM. Your skills are in huge demand in Qatar just now, so you'll have no problems getting placed.

It ain't so bad out here on your own. The family can visit you during the school hols and you can visit them during your hols. That's a lot of time together, then there's Skype for everything else.

I suggest you aim for QR45k/m, which after say QR8k accommodation and QR2k hire car will leave you with QR35k/m (£70kpa) to play with, tax & NI free, which will be a tad more than your take-home in Ireland. You'll have the mortgage and other debts cleared in no time and can send the kiddies to private school.

Sorry April 2015 not 2014. Life here in Qatar is so exhilarating the years just fly by.

For the win, send the wife back to work in the UK then pay all her salary into her private pension. That way, she'll be completely tax free too.

For the win-win, open a SIPP yourself before you leave the UK and pay in £2,880 and get an automatic £720 (20%) tax contribution from HMRC for this year and repeat the process for each of the next 5 tax years. Can't beat free money.
