VOT: Losing a Pet

Re: VOT: Losing a Pet
Oh, Rete, I am so, so sorry. It honestly doesn't matter how old they are when our pets pass on -- it is always too soon.
I remember losing my dear family dog, Peach; it was so devastating. We had adopted her as a two-month-old pound puppy on January 2, 1974, when I was two years old. She died almost 16 years later to the day, on New Year's Eve 1990. I had never known life without her, and it really was like losing a sibling, or the closest I can imagine to that, anyway.
My dog, Andie, is now 10½ years old, and as a large breed (Akita) in not-so-great-health, I am getting to the point where I worry about "how much longer". Akitas usually only live for 12-14 years. Andie is doing fine right now but at some point I know old age and/or her various health problems will catch up with her. I am severely dreading that day.
You can read about both my dogs, and see their pictures, in a blog entry I made in January.
(BTW, I can relate to your story about how Chey "abandoned" you for Jim -- Andie did the same thing when Mark entered our lives. She absolutely adores him. )
My condolences to you and your family, Rete. I really wish there was more that I could say. Please know we are thinking of you.

Awww... Rete, sorry about your loss
We have two cats that are about a year old now to which my husband and I both refer to as "the kids". Its pretty funny (pathetic?)... if one of them does something Chris doesnt like, he'll pick them up and give them a long lecture about how they should respect their elders, and how he brought them into this world and he can take them out...

Ahh, they are so sweet. So are all the other pictures. Someone should set up a photo gallery site for our animal photos. That would be kewl.

Dear Rete
I'm so sorry to hear about your poor kitty. I had to have my wonderful ginger tabby put to sleep 3 years ago. He was 14, nearly 15 years old but he had cancer in both his ear canals, heart and lung problems and then got a thyroid problem on top. I got him when me and my ex husband divorced and my children were very young and he was the glue that kept us together when it was just me and my kids in the early days. They grew up with him and we were all very sad when he passed away. We still talk about Charlie (he should have been called Garfield as every day was a Monday!), he was well known with all of my children's friends and in the neighborhood! I'm sure you will still be talking and remembering Chey in years to come too.
Yes, animals are definitely part of the family. We now have 2 dogs and 2 cats. I brought my dog and my cat with me as I just couldn't leave them behind.
Sincerest thoughts to you and Jim

Aww, baby, I'm so sorry. I know how sad it is when we lose someone we love. Even more so, sometimes, if that someone happens to be furry.
Philip and I have adopted three cats since we married.
Kitty Bear is our princess, she's a white Maine Coone and will be the first cat to tell you how beautiful she is and that you should pet her... now.
Liddle Cuzyouare is part Persian and all neurotic. She hates to be held, but she loves to sidle up next to you on her terms. She LOVES vanilla ice cream.
Harold Bogart is our youngest and our only boy. He's an orange tabby and he's all boy! We call him "The Sherriff" because no one in our home, human or kitty can do anything without him knowing!
I'll be thinking of you and am sorry for your loss. I know it was terribly hard for you, but you made the humane decision.

Found in the trash on Christmas eve in 1990, she was all black with a calm deposition who loved to lavish you with roaring purrs while she warmed your lap. She lost her left eye when she was about a year old because she slid on the wood floors while playing and ruptured the eye when she hit the corner of a dresser. Chey, as she was called, should have had her name spelled Shy. She would hide under the bed if the doorbell rang but if a man entered the house she would scoot out and promptly make a new friend. Chey abandoned me when I married Jim seven years. She became his girlfriend and at night she would wait until bedtime and when he got up from the computer or the sofa she would talk to him and lead him into the bedroom where she promptly cuddled up against his back.
Losing Chey today to kidney failure brought on by old age made me realize just how precious are pets are to us. I know that many people put Jenn down for the "save the pets" campaign after hurricane Katrina.
Today I can confirm just how emotional both Jim and I are at Chey's death and how we will miss her presence in our lives. I know that all those who lost their pets in both hurricanes are feeling as we are feeling this evening. People who love their pets are people who also love people. At least that is my opinion.
