Starting the CR-1 process all over again
Hello Everyone
I was a regular on Britishexpats roughly 3 years ago when I (USC) was applying for my wife when we lived in Italy. The advice and the experience I found here were invaluable and I see now many of the same names still active and still helping people.
Thank you so much, once again! You do this for love not money.
Last time, my wife's application was successfully and smoothly approved by the US consulate in Naples. However, as we packed to leave Italy, we were diverted at the last moment by a not-to-be-refused job offer in Germany.
Now it is time to move back to the US, and of course we need to go through the entire process again. I have not yet started and this post is my first action!
I have a few questions
1. Last time, I did not use a US sponsor for the I-864 form. By showing that we had more than the multiple of the required amount in liquid assets for a non-working sponsor, I was able to demonstrate that my family were not at risk of poverty. I recall at the time that raised a few eyebrows on the forum. So what should I expect this time? Do I absolutely need to have a US sponsor or can I rely on having sufficient cash assets?
2. We have unfortunately a long list of police certificates to collect - UK, Australia, Italy, Germany. As some of these (ie Italy) could take some time to collect, could we make a start already?
3. Anyone had any experience of consular processing in Frankfurt?
Thanks again in advance. I will be a regular visitor once again. What a fantastic resource it is.

1. Assets is fine, that's what we did. There seems to be a knee-jerk reaction by some to recommend a joint sponsor, but IMO it is entirely unnecessary if you have ample cash/liquid assets (very little of our assets were cash/ deposits, they were mostly real estate and liquid securities, though our assets comfortably exceeded the requirements).
2. So long as the police certificates aren't stale when you file your application you'll be fine - IIRC they have to be less than six months old when submitted. It doesn't hurt to start requesting them, but the dates on which they are issued will limit when you must apply without having to request a new certificate(s).
3. Sorry, can't help.
