Default SSN before or after marriage?

So we're flying out 5 weeks today and the wedding will be exactly 2 weeks after that.

I've read lots of threads about having to wait 10 days before applying for a SSN, and then having to go back with the marriage certificate afterwards to change my name. Is there anything to stop me waiting until after the wedding to apply for my SSN, so I don't have to go back to get my name changed? Just trying to save myself a journey

No. Many people want the SSN so that they can use it to get other things like a driver's license or credit card or something... but if none of that is an immediate issue for you, you can wait as long as you like.

No, not worried about driving or credit cards. My fiance's going to add me onto his bank account but, if they insist on a SSN, that can wait.

Thanks Ian

I didn't need a social security number to be added to my husbands bank account. I've been here for a month now and am just applying for one this week.

There is no obligation to change your name after marriage at all. Also, I suspect, but don't know, the SSN will be in the name on the USCIS records, so if a name change is desired, an extra trip would be required either way

My USC ex-wife spent ages changing her name on various documents to hersurname-hyphen-mysurname, then undid it all when we divorced. Waste of energy IMO.

I know there's no obligation (I've been married before...) but I want to take my fiance's name.

If an extra trip is required then it is <shrugs>
