..... If you are a nonresident visiting the U.S. with gifts, your personal belongings, or goods for resale, there is a possibility you will not have to pay duty. For instance, if you are visiting the U.S. for 72 hours or more you are allowed to bring up to $100 worth of goods duty-free. If the value of the gift exceeds $100, you will be required to pay duty. ....
There is a different threshold for USCs, and different rules for immigrants bringing personal possessions, which are generally not assessed for duty.

Whether you purchased something duty free, or duty paid overseas is irrelevant. If a visitor to the US (for more than 72 hours) brings in over $100 in gifts or objects that he/ she is not taking back home with them, then US duty is payable. .... Is it always charged? No, but could it be? Yes, absolutely.

Re: Marrying a US student
Got some more things to address between us. I've just posted in another forum with a similar set of questions.
It's all very helpful though so thank you.
My gf has got to speak to her parents about being a potential sponsor as she doesn't live with them right now.
Main concern for me is finding a decent paying job with minimal qualifications and 2 years insurance experience. What is the current job situation like in the US?
