Default GarethB789 - Question on DS260 - What to put for "county" for London?

I have another real quick question...

Basically I'm working through my DS-260 and there is a question on mother and fathers place of birth. It asks you for;

City...
State/province...
Country...

Both my parents were born in London which is a city in the United Kingdom which is the country (obviously), but what do I put down for State/province?

I understood state/province as being the county. I live in Essex and for my address details I have listed Essex as the State/Province but London is not in a county...

It has a check box for "do not know" but not one for does not apply.

Is there anyone who has filled in the DS260 recently who may know?

Cheers

Does it let you leave it blank?

No you can't leave it blank. You can check a box for "do not know" but thats it. I'm probably fussing over nothing but I want to get it right.

Thanks

How about: London, England, UK. That's perfectly acceptable.

Yes, I did think of using England but in my address details I have Essex as the province/state as Essex is not a city.

I'm probably over thinking this part aren't I? I'm hoping that as long as the addresses are correct and understandable then that's ok.

Probably. Especially since it's pertaining to your parents' place of birth, not your own. Even if you put the wrong answer, it's not likely to cause a problem with your visa approval.

Yes - no one is going to actually care where your parents are from!

General comment: all immigration forms are somewhat universal. The UK does not have "States" or "Provinces." So, when I was in practice, my practice was leave the State/Province either blank or this was one of the cases where "n/a" or "none" would be just fine.

BTW, at least OP felt that country "obviously" meant the UK. I've seen in the past where people were upset that "England" or "Scotland" was not a choice.

My husband and I almost had a fight over whether he should put "Tyrone" for "County", and "Northern Ireland" for "State", or whether he should put "Northern Ireland" for "Country" and... well, that particular paperwork nightmare is over now But Wikipedia literally has "Sovereign State" = "United Kingdom", "Country" = "Northern Ireland", then county, district, barony, parish, and townland, in that order.

I put England, as the United Kingdom is not a country.

But on the DS-260 England is not listed as a country you can pick from the drop down box. Only the UK is.

Precisely.

In the old days with physical paper forms, it was a "no harm, no foul" to put in England rather than "United Kingdom."

BTW, in the beginning of the Republic there was a dispute as to nature of the individual states of the United States. This dispute came to head in 1861 and was settled in 1865. As Shelby Foote put it: Before the Civil War, the correct usage was "The United States are ..." and after it was "The United States is ..." The former Confederacy has been anti-"union" ever since. [Terminology is powerful].

Middlesex if north of the Thames, Surrey if south of the Thames.
