Default AOS and Deploying Abroad

Hi All,

Landed in the US 4 weeks ago on a K1 Visa and married last week, and today we found out my wife will be deployed to Okinawa, Japan from August this year! (She's a Medical Officer in the US Navy and it's a 24 month deployment)

I'm going to be filling AOS later this week, do you think based on normal time frames (if there is such a thing) that I'll have my Permanent Residency by July? I've checked and being stationed abroad still counts as living in the US as far as maintaining residency, removing conditions and eventual citizenship is concerned, but you need to be in the US for the AOS part.

Thanks

Dan

Normal AOS, with no glitches, takes about 6 months. You might try making an Infopass appointment, take your completed AOS package and the deployment orders. Might be a long shot, but maybe you could expedite the AOS.

Uscis has a special military helpline worth a try.

Thanks. Will give them a call and see what they say about Infopass, could be worth a shot!

Called the helpline and they said to include a copy of the orders and expedition request with the application. Hopefully it will get picked up quickly.

General comment: although the discussion here is limited to adjustment [e.g. obtaining the "green card"] the links mention section 319(b) expedited naturalization. Once OP is granted adjustment, the fact that his spouse will be stationed in the US military overseas, he can apply for immediate naturalization.

[BTW, I have no idea how the 2 year condition works in that situation].

I saw that too, and did wonder if I could naturalize without ever having to remove the conditions as I'd definitely do that if so. Obviously my main priority is on adjustment right now, but will look into naturalization once we deploy.
