who has to work Natal day?
I am in a newish job and the whole office has to work Monday (Natal day). Everyone else I know (whos not in retail) is amazed as they dont.
I know its not a federal stat holiday (or whatever the terminology is) but I am feeling a little meh about it all

That's not fair. I'm not working it but then the staff in my place basically decide what holidays to have off! It's a very laid back kinda place!

I had to google Natal day, it's BC Day out my way.
It's my scheduled day off so I have it off which is the only way we get holidays off since airlines don't take holidays off.

If so, then yes, I have to work

I did think for a moment or two that I was in the wrong forum, and then wondered why a public holiday in Canada would be named after a province of South Africa.
But now I know. Thank you, Nova Scotia and PEI, for my piece of useless information for the day! I assume it's pronounced "NAYD-ul" rather than "nah-TAHL" though...

The legal status of the first Monday in August varies between provinces and territories. The first Monday in August is a statutory holiday in: British Columbia (British Columbia Day); New Brunswick (New Brunswick Day); Saskatchewan (Saskatchewan Day or Civic Holiday), and Nunavut (Civic Holiday) and the Northwest Territories (Civic Holiday).
It is a holiday of some form in Alberta (Heritage Day), Manitoba (Terry Fox Day), Newfoundland and Labrador (Civic Holiday, although the date is fixed by municipal council orders), Nova Scotia (Natal Day), Ontario (Civic Holiday, Simcoe Day or Colonel By Day), Prince Edward Island (Natal Day). It is important to note that while some employers in Ontario give their employees a holiday on the first Monday in August, the employer is not required to do so under Ontario’s Employment Standards Act, 2000 (ESA).
Schools, post offices, as well as many businesses and organizations are closed, while many workers have a day off in these areas. People are advised to check with the local authorities, transport services and businesses as to when services and stores are available on this day. Large scale parades, road races and other public events may cause some local disruption to traffic in some towns and cities. The first Monday of August is not a public holiday in Quebec and Yukon.

I know a number of people who are working and aren't in retail. It seems the best way to maximise holidays is to work for the government!
Oh, and not working but it wouldn't worry me if I had to. Same story with the utterly useless holiday they've introduced in February.

Not especially. I used to work mostly weekends so maybe that's why. Though sometimes on a Sunday evening I still get the horrors I used to get in the job I had 11 years ago thinking about Monday morning meeting with the boss.

I do still try to think of the weekend as separate, but then also forget which day of the week it is and have to check the newspaper.
Mind you, after 15 years of school, 5 years of university and 3 years teaching in England, and over 40 years of association with universities and child's schooling at all levels over here ............. I still tend to think of September as the start of the new year, rather than January 1st

Re: who has to work Natal day?
For most of the year it's the (English) footie season and with kick offs around 8.30/9.30 on Saturday/Sunday it's easy to know when the weekend is.
I've not worked since I escaped the DWP in 2004 but Friday is still the start of a weekend and the evening I'm most likely to have a whisky and 7Up.
I don't forget the day of the week but there are plenty of days it "feels like" a different day.

Wow, that takes it on a stage further.
