Default The Whisky Thread

This is a thread for whisky enthusiasts and hopefully to encourage whisky beginners. Reviews, recommendations, whatever. If you've got something to say or ask about whisky, let's do it here...

As I said earlier tonight, my favourite is Old Pulteney 12 which typically costs GBP 24-30 in the UK.

Love the slight salty tang; the slightest hint of smoke without peat. Great stuff. I usually have it neat, but sometimes add just a 'teardrop' of water to open it up. Never ice.

Despite my Irish Granny regularly getting pissed on whiskey, I don't really like it........... I can appreciate peat and smoked and fine and dead, nasty, dirt, cheap ...... but it's not my cup of tea.

I was given a Laphroaig Islay once. To say I am hooked is the understatement of the year. Peaty loveliness.

My mother also introduced me to Balvenie - tremendous stuff.

Always drink it neat, no water.

Do you prefer Coke or ginger ale in your whisky?

There's a similar thread elsewhere in the internet. I like the title of that one better:

NOTtheTalk - "like an Angel urinating down your throat" - a thread about drinking whisky. (Food and Drink)

I have almost a whole bottle of Caol Ila, Islay single malt - aged 12 years - given to me, oh must have been around 2006 if anyone wants it.

Good heavens. About a third of it has gone

It must have evaporated.

Can anyone suggest a use for it?

Do you measure or simply pour? I do the former (at least to begin with!) as I once received a nice measure as a gift.

A casual measure.
Chunky tumbler. Either 5 big ice cubes or 6 if from the ice maker (the pieces are smaller). Scotch to halfway, 7Up/Sprite almost to the top. Taste to make sure balance is right, then add another piece of ice.

Look, if it's good enough for Lieutenant Colonel Henry Blake, it's good enough for me.

Does the bus station count on the way to the falls?

Just pour. Count "One hundred, two hundred, three hundred... stop!", then another slug for luck.

Caol Ila is too iodiney for me.

I knew there'd be a reason why it doesn't go with 7Up.

Rye and ginger ale or 7up is ok, Scotch and pop seems a bit weird (ditto Irish).
I briefly considered walking to work and drinking whisky throughout the day, then rejected it. I blame Jingsamichty and his encouragement for even considering it, and the weight of my tools and laptop for not doing it.
