Where do you get your News?
As someone who enjoys a bit of current affairs, I was wondering if anyone could impart some advice on best places for me to keep up to date with Canadian National and International news? My Father in law (a Newfy living in Toronto) loves a good rant and it would be nice to a) have a clue what he is going on about and b) be able to point out where he is obviously wrong
I currently use the BBC, Telegraph and Guardian websites (and Daily Mail for a laugh) and listen to 5 Live on the way to and from work for the Uk side of things but am a bit lost for where I should be looking in Canada.
I have had a look at the the Globe and Mail and the TO Star websites for a few snippets but wondered if anyone could fill me in on how the newspapers / channels are in Canada and how they are biased (Ie Daily Mail & Telegraph - right wing, Mirror - Left wing etc).
Any info on news channels, radio and newspapers would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Globe and Mail — centre right. Endorsed the Tories in the federal election, but having a little buyer's remorse these days.
National Post — right wing, much like the Telegraph.
Toronto Sun — right wing, much like the Mail.
CBC — supposedly neutral, although the right complains that it leans left. Much like the BBC.
Some of this depends on your point of view. One man's "left leaning" is another's "raving commie".

And, for the ultimate horror, its sister organisation "NTV" brings a whole new level of amateurism to TV news. It's hospital radio circa 1985 in TV form.

No, no....for true news of Newfoundland, one need look no further than VOCM:

I had a fondness for the Montreal Gazette before I moved here.
I check the online version occasionally.

the CBC's radio output is pretty good, though a bit Curate's-Eggy.
Metro Morning (for GTA listeners) is mostly a municipal slant on current affairs with a bit of Canada-wide or, occasionally, worldwide context thrown in. 5.30 to 8.30 am.
The Current (8.30 - 10.00) pretty much does what it says on the tin: three half-hour segments looking at current affairs in a little more depth (and breadth - it's not only Canada-related stuff, although looks through a Canadian lens) - a mix of studio and phone interviews and packaged documentaries.
In the early evening, As It Happens (6.30 to 7.30) is a bit of a CBC radio institution - phone interviews with some (surprisingly) big-hitting newsmakers. Some interesting and eccentric segues: they might do an interview with the president of Tunisia and then jump to some guy in Alabama that found an image of the virgin Mary in his cornflakes...
As others have pointed out, the CBC is a bit like the BBC in terms of political slant: it's editorial stance is supposed to be neutral, but probably lands a bit left-of-centre by default. On the morning show, certainly, the sympathies of the presenters were closer to David Miller than they are to Rob Ford. But that's not exactly a controversial stance.
