People blaming the government - or a specified individual in the government - for stupid stuff and then when it becomes clear it was actually someone else who was to blame, just carrying on with the bashing.

Vancouver needs dedicated rental stock.

There is insufficient suppy of purpose built rental buildings. Build more rental stock purpose built and rents will stabilize.

Unlikely to happen.

It's a matched pair! People don't have their rear lights on because the government has stupidly taken control of the front lights.

Until purpose built rentals are built, nothing will change and it will only become worse.

Maybe one has to be one foot to the streets to understand the housing situation.

It is cost. One acre on W Georgia sold for $245m last year, plus the building costs. How can govt afford to provide housing anywhere near Vancouver? The only way to fund such a venture is more taxation, or cutting other services. Won't happen.

Understanding the situation does not enable it to be fixed.

Is someone moving from Chilliwack, where housing is cheaper, to Vancouver any better off where the hourly pay is higher? Vancouver pay maybe more, but is it proportionally more? If rent is double in Vancouver, one would need double the income, perhaps more to be in the same economic situation as someone in Chilliwack.

As much empathy as we may feel for those in difficult circumstances, government may like to fix it, but won't.

Purpose built rental stock doesn't mean government owned/built nor does it have to be on prime downtown real estate.

If it were not for the healthcare need that requires us to be in Vancouver we would move, we don't live here because we want to, we live here out of necessity as my other half needs healthcare simply not available in smaller regions like Chilliwack.

I am not disagreeing with the concept, but where could such a venture be located? How would it be funded?

A great alternative for donations to churches. A charitable foundation to help low income families. Given enough support, it could work.

The low cost housing stock always seems- eventually- to get occupied by people in good jobs who just want cheap rent. With the original poor tenant now turning into a wealthy landlord by sub-letting.

Co-ops are a better solution because they're at least a little self-regulating.
