Got to love a country where you can get a tax break on growing your own pot but can get done for " intent to supply eggs"

It's definitely local. The fruit and veg quality round here isn't good unless you buy huge amounts at Costco. One of the neighbours who used to live in Toronto was saying the same thing only recently.

Once more for luck! Excepting instant grits, I don't think there's any food that cannot be obtained in a fresh and high quality form in Toronto using public transit to fetch it. What's not available at the market is available in specialty shops. The same is true of cooked food, almost anything is available served, if not cooked, by a native of the country of the cuisine. Some items, dog, bear gall bladders, raw milk, require developing a network of interested suppliers and consumers but it's all there if you trouble to find it.

Price is another matter, some stuff aint cheap.

I lived in Guelph for a while and, being a tight Yorkshireman, always shopped at No Frills. I found the price, selection, and quality hard to beat anywhere. All of the students shopped there so they always had a high turnover and the produce was fresh. Good fish is not as easy to find as it was almost wherever you go. Even in England, it is more likely to come from some Russian factory ship than be delivered fresh from the docks every day like it was.

We ate fish over Christmas. We fetched it, like most things, from the St. Lawrence market. There doesn't seem to be a fishmongers in Guelph but we're soon to try two in Kitchener.

I've not been in a No Frills in Guelph, I know there's one out by the 401 but the preferred locations for buying food in Guelph itself are the farmer's market, the bakery called With the Grain, and Market Fresh, an independent shop.

No wonder the people in the east wonder if all of BC are smoking something.... if they arent then they are eating it in their bread

Fish is pretty good here on the east coast but we are only 60 miles from the sea.

Fresh Lobster for sale today $5.97 a pound

I brought some whelks from a store just inside quebec border with NB (I was so shocked to find them) so they do exist but it seems most locals dont want them... I havent seen cockles but picked and boiled plenty of winkles from the seaside here (not the same as cockles but not too bad)

I used to love the ones at the seaside in vinegar. Half a pint of each and some jellied eels.

yes that is a fair point and at risk of being tarred as one of the 'stupid people' on here (your words) I had a look around quite a few specialist wine shops, poncy ones in Kits too, they all said..ooh no that is quite specialist and you will have to order it online from the states, so I was quite suprised to find it in the UK equivalent of Bargain Booze. Ta very much.

Further study on Whelks in Canada has revealed that there isnt much of a market for them. They are sent either to Japan (large ones) for sushi or Europe for general scoffing by people at the seaside.

However even though there are plenty of whelks here in Eastern Canada, the cost of catching, cleaning and preparing them for consumption and the lack of a local market means they are uneconomical in Canada
