Default Third Party Car rental insurance

Bit of an oddball question

I'm looking to rent a vehicle abroad and i've found a company willing to rent to me providing I can provide my own liability insurance. (The rental company itself does not cover me as I am too young)

Is there a company I can go through to purchase this whether a Canadian or European company?

I've spoken to my car insurance company and they only provide coverage within North America.

After doing some research...would an umbrella policy be applicable for something like this?

I have CDW through my Visa but not primary/third party liability which is what I need. (The rental company provides no insurance whatsoever since i'm underage so I basically need to provide all of my own insurance.)

I'd suggest contacting an insurance broker in whatever country you're renting the car in.

Working on this, so far I haven't come up with any company there that offers hire car insurance or insurance when you don't actually own the vehicle you are insuring.

I did find this that covers rental cars https://www2.chubb.com/ca-en/individ...al-excess.aspx

Don't know Gozit, but Novo's suggestion is the best way to go. Try phoning a broker up, may be easier than trawling through web pages.

Aren't you about 19 or 20? I'm not aware of any rental companies that rent for below age 21. The same difficulties occur for over 75 or over 80 year old drivers as my 82 year old father is finding out.

Wouldn't a relatively young person like you be better served by public transport?...like most other european young people?

I'm 19. Yes most of the big companies (Hertz, Avis, etc) don't rent to younger people however this is more of a local "under the table" cash deal.

Public transport in Malta and Gozo is a bit of a nightmare...the one time I tried it took me 40 mins to go a 10 min drive, don't really feel like doing that lol.

I've debated buying a car there but it doesn't seem like a good use of money to sit for 10 months of the year and maybe used for a month. That is a good find though.

Suck it up Princess or file a Yooman Rights complaint about how being young and trying to obtain insurance is hard and expensive if renting overseas

I doubt you will be able to buy basic liability insurance for a car without owning the car. Add on policies cover liability top up and collision damage waiver. In Malta, a renter has to be over 21 to rent a car, so even if you managed to buy insurance, it may not be valid if a renter does not meet the age requirements.

A local broker in Malta who knows the rules is the best bet.
