Remember When ...

Re: Remember When ...
Kids today will probably never have to queue up to use a payphone unless they're in prison, nor experience the despair of only having a 50p piece to make a 10p call.
Hopefully this Google Maps grab works - I've driven past this sign in Norfolk a few times and one day I will stop and go in to try to make a call...

In many ways it was the innocence of youth, I used to love the smell of the glue in model aircraft kits etc. but NEVER even thought of it as 'getting high' mind you I only used to make about a kit a month.

Could you imagine the hoo har now that would hit the headlines regarding birds pecking the silver foil off the top of your milk as it sits on the door step, all the tests for milk induced bird flu !!!
Here we buy bags of the stuff and for some reason it lasts weeks ! Milk used to go off after a couple of days

Dialling a phone with a round dial thats attached to a wall and sitting, sometimes on the floor, to chat.
Going to the library to research, no google
Having to wait for a letter and then write back to a friend, the highlight was when photos were included.
MSDOS. I felt like such a technie typing in "spool" or similiar at a prompt with green font on a black background.
Fax machines - oh wait, thats still in my life

Not that long ago, but I remember when you used to have to rummage around your pockets or wallet for the right amount of cash to pay for lunch, hand it over, wait for the server to count it, put it in the till, hand back some change, count it, and try not to lose it. Now, contactless payment, instantly done.
I'd have thought that you of all people would have some sort of automaton to do that sort of thing. If not to take your place actually doing work stuff, at least for lunch.

...you painstakingly entered x'teen lines of BASIC using the ZX81's awful membrane keyboard for the famed "ram pack wobble" to occur and lose everything.
...you took film out of a camera, put it in an envelope, sent it off to Truprint and waited a few weeks to see whether your pics had come out at all.
...mobile phone batteries lasted for days. (Because it was just a phone, not a handheld computing device)
...you had to apply to get internet access at work. In 1990 something I recall having to fill in a form to explain why I needed to access the 'net.
...cars had manual chokes and you had to pull a knob out to start them. (Fnarr Fnarr)
...the big screen TV took up most of the rec-room
etc.

Paying a bill by internet banking or via the supplier's website rather than by phone or at the post office.

Re: Remember When ...
... the phone ringing was the most exciting thing that happened in the house all evening!
Us kids would sprint to the phone in the freezing cold lobby, desperate get there first to find out who it was, and who it was for. Then we'd hide close by, earwigging on the call.
These days when the house phone rings my kids won't get off their arses to pick it up.

Research purposes, natch.
In a kind of related (at least to where you were going point), waiting for 5 minutes while your dial up 28.8kbps internet connection downloaded mucky pictures. We had to work to get our porn in my day young whippersnapper.

I find cash easier, I know exactly how much money I have with cash, when it's all electronic, it's more difficult to keep track of how much is left, no huge balances here, so cash is easiest all around.
Plus always need change/coins for parking meters.
A couple of us oldies at work were talking about dial up internet at work yesterday, and the youngsters couldn't quite grasp dial up internet, we tried to explain it, and explain there wasn't always wifi either, but I guess they are just too young to remember those days.
How about writing cheques for rent....oh wait I still do that....lol (have to management company doesn't do electronic payments.)
