The only thing we've witnessed "our" hawk take from teh yard is a squirrel. It seems quite a few small birds are still happy to run the gauntlet for a feed. We have one of those feeder stand things on the deck with four hooks to hang different types of feeders from: a nut cage for nuthatches and woodpeckers, a suet cake thingy that everything seems to love, nyger seed for finches and other small birds, and one for larger birds that the cardinals seem to enjoy in particular. We have plenty of chickadees, finches (gold and house), sparrows, cardinals, jays, nuthatches, woodpeckers (downy and hairy varieties), juncos, the occasional purple finch - even a a hardy northern flicker or two.

There are few cats in the immediate area; squirrels and ground-feeding birds are quite content to pick up the bits the perching birds drop. What's fascinating is watching the birds' behaviour when the hawk comes by. Woodpeckers, especially, don't fly off but just go absolutely rigid and sit, motionless, for as long as it takes the hawk to get bored and move on. We watched one the other lunchtime that must have been stock-still for a good 15 minutes.

Oh, the joys of not being gainfully employed!

The not moving this is because birds see only see movement so if you don't move then the bird can't see you. Cat's are much the same too noticing moving prey more than still, and I think there must be an element of this in human sight too. I think

There are loads of doves around the pool here. Enough of them to be a pain. Every evening, regular as clockwork at about 5.30, there is a a mass whoosh and they all take off and head for cover, mainly in the ficus and grapefruit trees. Then, a few seconds later, a kestrel appears, sits for a few minutes and then leaves. A few seconds later the doves all come out of hiding. They always know well enough in advance to get out of sight.
On the other hand, humming birds will often nest right among raptors. They know that they won't be bothered by them because they are too small to be a meal and too fast and agile to be caught. They also know that no other creatures will bother them because of the raptors presence.
Isn't Mother Nature wonderful.

A typical haul from the cheese shop. They had Wensleydale as well but it was pointed out that that is commonplace "sure, you can get that in Loblaws".
