My question is, are they less able to handle booze over in London?
Never seems to be an issue at other zoo's who have late hours in the summer and sell beer.

Not as a private event exactly, but open late in summer. San Diego Zoo comes to mind with extended night hours until 9pm and beer is available for purchase.
Sea World San Diego is also open late in summer, 11pm and beer available there as well.
I just don't recall hearing of this sort of thing over the years there.

The London Zoo evenings seems to encourage drinking and British people do like to get silly drunk so it's a bad combination.

Doing a search the alcohol content of beer depends on what state your in, 3% on the low end all the way up to 12% and many states with no min or max limit.
California is 4% for beer.
