Default OTT? Just a tad

Thought I had seen it all. Apparently not

A Kingston, Ont., pub located in a stone building that once housed Sir John A. Macdonald's law office is shedding the name of Canada's first prime minister because it's offensive to some Indigenous customers, according to its owner.

Sir John's Public House, a two-storey pub and restaurant on King Street that seats 150 patrons, will abbreviate its name to The Public House, Paul Fortier confirmed Monday.

Would they serve an aboriginal person then? Small town pubs aren't usually keen on doing that.

Well thats just ridiculous. It seems its a pastime these days for some to get offended by someone or something.

And in another place at another time.... Virgin West Coast train firm stops selling Daily Mail - BBC News
What was it that Voltaire and others were quoted as saying? Ah yes.. 'I Disapprove of What You Say, But I Will Defend to the Death Your Right to Say It'.. Unless of course it's in the Daily Mail and you happen to be on a Virgin train.

Aren't schools in Ontario doing the same thing?

I think it's ridiculous thinking history can be wiped out by renaming things. It happened, it may not be seen as good these days, but it still happened, renaming something doesn't make it unhappen.

We can be shocked by things that happened in history, it means we have learnt and evolved. We can teach and understand things were wrong.

Look. It's bad enough travelling on a privatised Virgin train. The last thing you want is to sit next to a Mail reader.

Perfect synopsis of it all.

This article sums it up quite well.

It isn't rewriting history or erasing it, it's just stopping lauding people who it turns out had some unpleasant ideas. In Sir Johns case it was genocide.

Defending a right isn't really the same as providing the means.

In any case, there are laws about inciting hatred, among other things the Mail has been guilty of. The Mail said something about taxpayer subsidies for trains, but if public money is involved isn't that all the more reason to not provide material that is frequently illegal and has been proven so repeatedly by legal actions?

So perfectly said!

It was a different time, people were rather uncivilised back then. History is history, he was Canada's first Prime Minister whether we like it or not, and that is a landmark in this country's history.

All historical figures are going to have had unpleasant ideas judged by the standards of today. I don't know that naming things after people is a good idea in the first place but renaming them because the historical figure didn't foresee the future shift in fashion against the ideas of the day makes little sense. Still, it's pub, presumably it's free of taxpayer subsidy, so if they want to change the name to something more politically correct, perhaps The Nigel Farage, that's the owner's choice.

Quite. Consider Bomber Harris. Icon or war criminal?
