only one problem I was munching down on a bag o peaches at the time in the passenger seat ...border patrol guy just grunted and waved us on.

Into California on major routes the state has agriculture check points.
California is the largest farming state and because of geography most pests cant make it over the mountains on their own so only way they can get across is hitch hiking in cars and trucks and the plants and fruits they bring in.
Now depending on time of year and what the concerns are the level of inspection will vary.

Passengers wont see it but when airlines have aircraft arrive from certain destinations after off loading inspectors will look for certain pests as well. This varies by time of year.
In border states the border patrol may also have check points looking for illegals. But these are not necessairly at state lines.

One time I was re-entering Canada at Oroville with my mom and the US border guards caught a few guys hiding in the bushes near the road waiting for dark or a chance to run over and they had them up against the car with guns stuck in their noses and ears. It was like something on COPS.
