Re: Messages that dont get a reply
We can receive texts, well if someone texts the landline, it rings and an automated voice reads the text out, usually not very well either...
I haven't heard of sending text's from a landline though, our provider doesn't appear to offer it anyhow.

With BT , I had a phone that could send and receive texts. Comcast uses an app to send and receive texts to you landline. I am not aware of any phones that have the function in the US. I have never looked as for a long time I didn't use a landline except for faxes.

Guilty as charged.
A text will ping at an inconvenient time so I will quickly look at it. Unless it is a life or death situation I will then plan on responding later and get on with the task at hand.
Then I forget.... I will have a "crap I never responded" moment and hastily send a message to the person who texted me hours if not days earlier.
So in my case it's just that it came through at the wrong time. As I'm getting older I'm having a few short term memory issues too.
But I 😍❤️ you Howefamily so if I ever don't respond to a text or Facebook message it's only because I'm getting old!!!

I do like my smart watch where I don't need to find my phone to look at the text or to see who is calling.

I find it irritating, my husband has one, you can see his attention drawn away while he checks his wrist to see if it's more or less important than what's going on right then.

I use text and email as until relatively recently I couldn't hear on a phone. It pisses me off big time when people don't message back and try to call instead. I was very surprised at how few people text here. It's better now than it was but its like the dark ages at times.

Re: Messages that dont get a reply
We have never had a cell phone, and we don't have any other messaging devices.
I answer emails if I feel like it, and it seems important. I admit that I sometimes intend to reply later, but then the message slips down the listing and I forget.
.............. I have one so-called friend who insists on sending photos of her grandchild every couple of months but with no other message or updated news of her. I would like to keep in contact with her, but I don't want continued photographs of the child.
I have one free email account that I always forget to check, but luckily no person has that information, it was just given to a couple of companies or online sites.

If there's an email that needs no response it goes into the F/F folder (if appropriate of course) and an email I send also goes into the FF folder. BUT I only keep the last or relevant ones there, deleting earlier ones as and when they cease to be relevant.
Things like acknowledgments of Amazon orders go into another folder until order completion so the very presence of an email in my inbox is my reminder and those in my F/F folder are my record of when there was last contact so I don't let it go too far.

You haven't mentioned you have a smart watch or whatever, so whoever it was who posted that they check their emails on it may think you are disconnected.
What's next, brain implants at birth?

No, I haven't got a smart watch and tend to agree with TinyTory on their usage. I think it's a very bad habit to be engaged in online messaging when you're with others. These days you go to a restaurant and can see the whole table or even couples bemusedly staring into their mobile phones. Worse, is happening on a table where every single person in a party of six is playing Candy Crush (I kid you not).

Re: Messages that dont get a reply
I don't tend to get too bent out of shape about people not responding, certainly not to texts. Most texts are of the utter drivel variety unless of the imperative sort "pick me now please".
I see texts as a 'thing apart' so if get a text from someone and saw them half an hour later I wouldn't refer to it, unless it was earthshattering.
If my husband or son get a text while we are talking and they look away and respond to it I go bonkers, it's SO not on.
My son has a smart watch...a great boon for a week but seldom looks at it now...thank heavens.

Best use of a smart watch
(yes, I know it's not really a watch...but it is smart!)

Shard ...............
I really honestly truly do not see the need to be continually "connected", especially when so much of the connect is needless trivia.
I hate the way people walk around with the cell phone to their ear or texting, even when conducting business at the bank, paying in a store, supposedly having coffee with friends, etc etc etc.
It's not only annoying but it's b***** rude, and ignorant.
I love it when restaurants have a sign saying please leave your cell phone at Reception. I wish they would do it with all the other devices.
