Now this thread is not aimed at those who want to work and willing to work or having trouble finding work to make ends meet and provide for their families but stories like this I think make our blood pressure rise a few notches.

Britain's most shameless dad Peter Rolfe pockets £500K in benefits still won't work | UK | News | Daily Express

I have no desire or intention to watch this series but FFS when will this end.
Im sure this happens in quite a few countries and just not the UK.

One of those stories eh? I'm sure there won't be any facts that conflict with the narrative that is essentially PR for another TV freak show designed to appeal to their viewers indignation.

Great reason to leave the country though.

UK seems a little too generous on their social assistance programs. You won't have a comfortable life in Canada living on welfare, and if your employable and simply not willing to work, well most provinces will boot you off in a heart beat.

Corporate welfare costs the taxpayer a lot more, but doesn't generate the same level of self righteousness.

Will they pay for kids' welfare? Sounds like this is £800 a week for 26 kids.

Any benefits system that pays a parasite like him that much money each week is seriously flawed.

No you won't but then they will claim social assistance from the Province they live in. What we can say is like the UK Canada has its fair share of those who won't work as by the time they have their deductions taken off their pay cheques they would sooner sit at home rather than work.
Sure its not a life of Riley for them but they usually find money to provide themselves with booze and smokes. Some will brazenly rob you as well or break into your home and sell the stuff they thieve for money.
NOTE Im not insinuating they all do it as some are genuinely unable to work.

It's all very distasteful, this benefits-shaming 'journalism'.

Like it or not, the man is just acting within the rules - the same defence that MPs use to justify their own reprehensible trough-snouting.

I was talking about provincial benefits, if your able to work and simply refuse to work, most provinces will boot you off faster then you can blink an eye.

There is a grey area between general assistance and disability which has a high threshold, but one can be considered not employable, but not disabled, so those end up on long term general assistance, but again they are not deemed as being employable by the ministry.

If the ministry deems you employable, they have no issue tossing you off assistance if you simple refuse to work.

BC has a 5 week work search requirement before one can even qualify to receive assistance.

Most of those who bash social assistance in Canada have no real idea how difficult it actually is to qualify, and receive benefits in Canada.

A single person will receive in BC 235 per month. If they have housing, the ministry will provide a rent supplement of up to but not exceeding 375 per month. (note the housing supplement will never exceed the actual rent if less then 375.)

A single parent with 2 kids will receive

375.58 per month* ( a rent supplement of up to 660 per month is provided, but will not exceed the actual rent if less then 660.)

* Parents may also get supplements from a federally administered payment that is comprised of the British Columbia Basic Family Bonus and the National Child Benefit Supplement. *

Life on welfare in Canada is miserable, and nobody I've ever met on it, wants to be on it if they can work.

Obviously some find ways around the rules, but that happens with any program.
