I think FL is right. I went hiking while pregnant but I was only 6 weeks pregnant and we were in Europe.

I'm a little bit reminded of a reporter a few years ago who crossed a border somewhere dangerous for a story. Daily Express woman dressed as a man? Something like that?

Another reason I’m following is that I’m interested (not just in this case) in how former hostages re-adapt once released, and what kind of support (mental health, media training, financial, etc) they get, or don’t get. Unfortunately it’s rare that we get follow-up stories once the initial media furore subsides.

Re: Joshua Boyle
I can think of a couple of stories where male journalists smuggled themselves into/out of no-go areas (Afghanistan for one) under a burkha, but I’m drawing a mental blank on a woman doing the reverse.

Oh absolutely, me too. That’s one of the reasons I’m following it quite closely.

Re: Joshua Boyle
Surely the pregnant woman made her own decision about travel to Afghanistan and wasn't taken.
This story is odd though, something is amiss

Re: Joshua Boyle
Who has the right to tell a woman what to do or not to do except perhaps a medical professional This is what the Canadian Govt recommends
Timing of travel
The safest time to travel is between the 18th and 24th weeks of pregnancy. Most common obstetric emergencies occur in the first and third trimesters.
The decision to travel should be made in consultation with your health care provider. Discuss the purpose of travel, destination(s), length of the trip, planned activities, underlying medical and/or pregnancy related complications and available medical care in other countries.
If you decide to travel while pregnant, make sure that you have proper travel health insurance. Review your policy and the coverage it provides, as most policies do not automatically cover pregnancy-related conditions or hospital care for premature infants.

Re: Joshua Boyle
I wonder what the premiums would be. Cheap because there'd be no expensive hospital bills to pay in Afghanistan or expensive due to repatriation costs or high because of ransom demands and a high chance of body recovery.

Re: Joshua Boyle
I work with a Pakistani who grew up near the Afghan border and recently moved to Canada.
He said something about the Woman having a family member with ties to the Taliban or something like that. I wasn't really paying attention but we did laugh at the difference in reporting from Fox News & The Washington Post.

In disguise but maybe not as a man (it might have been a movie that confusled me)
I believe it was Yvonne Ridley while working at the Sunday Express. I thought it was longer ago too.

Re: Joshua Boyle
My guess is insurance would not be obtainable for that area, or at least traditional travel insurance wouldn't be.
