Don't celebrate it then you can't be accused of not being prepared. Just because you might consume alcohol, mince pies, chocolate oranges etc etc doesn't mean you are celebrating xmas.

Maybe it comes from decades of whatever you buy for someone is received very well but then it stays in the back of a cupboard for a decade so you stop making the effort.

This will be the first xmas since me, stepkids and mother in law lost a wife, mother and daughter. I suggested that instead of prezzies we spend money on a few meals out - not actually xmas meals, just to break up the long winter.

Other than that, we'll have the usual xmas tree and lights and other treats and I'll spend hours on xmas dinner, whatever it may be, getting it just right. We had Turkey and trimmings for Thanksgiving - which is bizarre as we don't "do that"

We usually watch Love Actually on xmas eve but that may not be a good idea this time.

Perhaps "About Time" instead.

We have some of our Christmas lights up.

The LED disco ball lights that we've put in the pot lights at the front of the garage are super naff...

The neighbours think they're great!

Most of the neighbourhood swapped out their Halloween stuff for their Christmas stuff. Even before Remembrance Day.

We've got our outside tree lit, got the 1st crimble card today. Have bought a few gifts for DD, OHs is on the way, still contemplating about the UK branch of the family. OH and I are just getting each other little things and having a trip somewhere in lieu of grand gifts. DD turns 21 on Jan 8th, she asked for posh luggage for Christmas/birthday, so she'll not get extravagant Christmas, but more than she thinks and luggage and return flights to a destination of her choice, looking like Australia for her birthday.

Christmas cakes are being alcoholised, Christmas puds are maturing, mincemeat is maturing, rum raisins are being soaked, so feeling quite organised right now...ask again in teo weeks when ive not added to my done list lol.

Oh it is wonderful not working in the mall! !!

Also a lovely movie, but that might set you off too.

The only advice I can give is to chat "normally" about your wife, and laugh and cry just when you want to!

We have been set up for about 10 days now, pulled out the tree and decorations. Now time to sit back and wait for January 2nd and take them all day.

No gift exchanging here, so no shopping needed, and we are not doing any dinner or anything so nothing to prep for there.

Christmas for us is stress free and relaxing since everything is closed, just lounge at home. It's more about decorating and adding some cheerful lights to the window and having a fake tree up. Would prefer a real tree, but they are not allowed in apartments.

Biggest issue this time of year is a new year approaching, never too fond of the new year.

Perhaps you could do silly stockings for each other, or draw a name and buy a gift for under $20? Vouchers for itunes, amazon or similar work if all else fails!

Buy everyone a festive onesie or a hat and wear them on Christmas morning!

Christmas is a magical time when alleged car accident victims who have managed to avoid me come out and shop till they drop, and travel to and from relatives and some times pubs and bars. I truly wonderful time of year indeed.

Someone across the street threw some lights up into their tree and I can see those from the front door, that should be adequate. If the mood takes me I may liberate a string or 2 of old lights from storage at work and put them up in the house. I'll be trying to re-create the motif and atmosphere of a whorehouse in Salina Cruz over 40 years ago.

Thats the ticket. I usually try and fit in at least a couple of pre-Christmas Christmas lunches, scheduled around around work the next day as I tend to "make a day of it."

As for gifts, I use it as an excuse to buy myself something nice and then put it HID's name on it. That way the MIL thinks she made an effort.
