1: It reminds me of a great (apocryphal ??) story I once heard. In a court hearing regarding child maintenance, the judge admonished a young woman who had written 'F. All' on a form where there was space to write what help the family was getting from the state. After having sat through this, the woman then stood up and replied that 'F. All' is her abbreviation for 'Family Allowance'.

However, 'F.A.' in Britain usually refers to 'Football Association', the organisation of doddery old men in blazers who supposedly run the great game in this land. As in 'FA Cup'.

2: Hmm, interesting. Definitely not England, and NI would be too contentious. The urge to Google is strong but I'd guesstimate Wales. They're very patriotic (for some reason).

3: Wales: St. David
Scotland: St. Andrew
England: St. George April 24(?)
N.I : St. Etienne (well, you never know)

4: 10

5: Taking boxes back to Argos.

6: A stomach pump. (oh, and some coal)

7: And we're back round to number one again !!!!

I'd like to know how many Brits would pass this test. Mind you, pass rates are probably mighty low.

Thank you yonk and NWM for making me feel less thick.

OK....

1 - FA ... of course, Football Association! duuuuuuh!

2 - My hunch was correct!

3 -
March 1st - St David's Day - Wales
March 17th - St Patrick's Day - NI
April 23rd - St George's Day - England
Nov 30th - St Andrew's Day - Scotland

I've been told that this question - know the dates, saints and countries is almost guaranteed to be on the test. Can anyone offer a good mnemonic? The ruder, the better, of course.

4 - hmmm.... according to the book, there are 4 bank holidays. Apparently Bank Holidays are "when legislation requires banks and most businesses to close. These are of no nationalistic or religious significance". It's good to test about life in the UK by defining things completely differently than 99% of the population of the UK, innit?

5 - Boxing Day "refers to a time when servants, gardeners and other trades people used to receive money - a Christman Box - in appreciation for work they had done throughout the year."

6 - Coal! ... that explains my weird Scottish granddad then! I remember him visiting and giving me a lump of coal... all these years I just thought it was becasuse he was just a bit loopy!

"first footing" - first visitor brings coal, whiskey and/or bread to ensure prosperity for the coming year.

Interesting!

7 - Oh yonk!

"At the stroke of midnight, the backdoor is opened to release the old year. It is then locked to keep luck in, and at the last stroke, the front door is opened to let in the new year". ... how very feng shui.

Well that section was actually kind of cool.... the next is all about the government.

Def didn't know No. 7.

I know about 1st footing as my neighbour came over at 1.30 am one Hogmanay....

I suppose I'm getting Public Holidays and Bank Holidays mixed up....still, I'm sticking to saying that there are different Bank Holidays up here.

I've been dreading this.... "How Britain is Governed" ... straight to the questions.

1 - What is the role of Prime Minister? ( I smell a trick question. )

2 - What did the title of Prime Minister used to be called in Latin?

3 - Where are government statements usually reported to be coming from?

4 - What is the Cabinet? (well I have a vague notion but ...?)

5 - What type of constitution does the UK have?

6 - What is the name of the official reports of the proceedings in Parliament?

1 - To exercise the governmental duties of the Queen.. ?

2 - Not a clue =(

3 - Whitehall.

4 - I thought we had a constitutional monarchy, but maybe they're after 'unwritten' or something as we don't have a single bit of paper with 'Constitution' written across the top.
