Heard a US security man state that they needed 'Canine Units'. Why not simply say 'dogs'?

I hear the police in Canada use canine as well, especially on that border guard show...
Seems to be the norm, but then veterinarians use canine instead of dog as well on prescription labels, at least all the vets I have been to do.

Re: Gobbledegook
Did he say canine or K9? In North America Law Enforcement agencies tend to use the K9 monicker for their dog units as opposed to calling them canine units. Now what you heard or think you heard doesn't really make a difference as they are essentially the same. IMHO they are the dogs bollocks when it comes to helping out law enforcement agencies

Re: Gobbledegook
Isn't a "canine unit" the dog, its handler, and the van they arrived in carrying all the paraphernalia? There's more to it than just the dog.

That one really annoys me. Years ago, when the offices of the public relations agency I was working for were being refurbished, the architect referred to "vision panels" in a presentation on the new design. Our boss, who was on a bit of a Plain English kick at the time for all of our communication, called him out on it. Architect bloke tried to wriggle, but you don't win if you try to argue semantics with a room full of people who stretch the truth for a living....

Re: Gobbledegook
When this happened last year the cops chased a suspect into our street and he ran between 2 houses then around the house to his right and hid under the porch on the side. The Canine unit was already close and they just screeched up (1st on the scene), turned Rover loose and in about 10 seconds I could hear the guy screaming to call the dog off. Good job Rover!
