Isn't that what happened in Spain? I think it's called Benidorm.

I think you have a great point. I have read so much about feeling so homesick or anxiety when you move away. I have lived in south calgary five years from the north of England and miss my rolling hills and great pubs back home. But I work (self employed) full time with a 6 year old boy and married (my husband loves every minute here) my eldest two children live back in the UK as they couldn't settle. I miss them too so much. I have visited only once last Christmas. My husband will not hear of it for me to travel on my own when I earn my own money. It's making me very sad.

It seems to also work in Canada, sorry parts of the GTA, for some nationalities, Brampton springs to mind! Walking and driving round, unless I knew I was in Canada I would think I was in some part of Asia.
Same goes with parts of the UK, around the midlands, East London. And also with parts of Australia.
I personally think moving to a new country try to embrace as much of the new country culture and lifestyle as you can. While some you may not particularly like, agree with or just find a little strange. You moved for a reason!!

We gave Brampton a try. All I will say is we didn't stay!

IKWYM...but I think those days are over. Internet, mobile communications, cheap transport, it means cultures are now moveable too. People tend to move for economic benefits, not to integrate into new cultures.

We're visiting Siouxie. I know we were supposed to be moving to Orangeville but work opportunities took us the other way.
I know some have issues with Hamilton and I would agree that some parts are rough but there are some amazingly welcoming people here. In the 6 weeks since our move we have met all the neighbors and even some people on other streets.

We're now surrounded by a huge mix of people. There are some who are struggling to find room on their skin for another tattoo to others who are already three sheets to the wind by 9am at the weekend.
But they're all genuine. They have welcomed us with open arms and chat with us whenever they see us. It's the friendliest place we've lived in Canada.

Hamilton seems like Pittsburgh to me. Industrial heritage resulting in some lovely buildings but, also, industry with all its related smells and dirt, some nice parks (we used to go to a waterfall there from time to time) and lots of very nice horsey properties technically within the city limits. Rough bits because industry comes and goes and the people don't disappear when it's hard times for the plant. Street of pubs, that's more Cleveland than Pittsburgh, but still definitively rust belt. I would move there more readily than in a dormitory town such as Oakville or Burlington.
Someone in this room bought on Beach Blvd early this year, nothing south of the backyard. He's not happy about the non-summer.

I'm back there next weekend at a housewarming BBQ of another friend who just bought there.
"The Lees" (not posted on here much of late) have also moved out that way.
All of them live in the bit of Hamilton that is north of the 403 not far from McMaster. It's generally nice and leafy with the students keeping down the price of food, beer and brunch in the near by amenities.
There is definitely a surge of young professionals heading there.
