Cancer Awareness Gone Wrong

Re: Cancer Awareness Gone Wrong
A girl I know is in the top 40 for 5 college scholarships of a substantial amount. One of the determiners is hit count on youtube of part of her cancer awareness video. If you have a sec, could you check it out?

No probs....I have never put a link up anywhere to promote any of my kids, cousins, nieces, nephews, etc., etc. for any kind of contest, selling cookies, or whatever they come up with. But I just really feel for this girl (no relation of mine but a former student)....she has had a hard life but has pulled herself up and now has dreams of going to college. The only reason I knew about the video is that a fellow teacher sent the link to us....she would never try to promote herself in such a way. Our school does a huge fund drive for breast cancer research every year and I think that is how she found out about the scholarship thing.

A scholarship for a substantial amount is based on a youtube hit count? Really? Oh well, so much for academic merit or achievement - country is going to the dogs etc etc.

I know but the country is the US...where academic achievements are well down the list when it comes to getting a place at uni.

"Carnegie Mellon University Bagpipe Scholarship
Want some easy money? Like wearing kilts? Study the bagpipe! Every year, Carnegie Mellon University offers a $7,000 scholarship to any student who wants to study the bagpipe. Apparently, most people would rather take their chances robbing a bank, since most of the time this scholarship goes unclaimed."

Re: Cancer Awareness Gone Wrong
A large majority of scholarships come from private foundations set up through trusts, not the school or government, and they decide what hoops the recipient has to jump through. Kids today search and apply for whatever $$ they can get....the cost of higher ed is out of control.

Anyway this is the Canada forum...we should be discussing this in the US forums.

on days like today 'BOLLOCKS' would be more to the point
Cancer steals, so as long it is still effective, rather than causing campaign fatigue, it is fine with me.
