Can anyone recommend a good e-guitar
For playing jazz and blues mainly. Good quality but not exorbitantly expensive. e.g. max $800? Would there be something good and good value in that price range?

Look for an epiphone hollow body or a les paul with jazz pickups. Google jazz guitars to get a pic of what you be buying. Prices can be 100$ up to 10,000$ they make many guitars for many pockets

I'd say go for a Mexican Fender Strat but, as Magnumpi says, most players know what they want and will need to give it a go to see if it "feels" right for them.

Have you tried the Mexico strat, Squire and or US Fender ? I tried a US fender last week, I like the thicker neck, not sure about the Mexico one, I hear that they are great guitars though

Not sure if the gift is for a beginner, but when I was starting out, I knew absolutely nothing about guitars, and wasn't even sure I'd like it or be able to learn it....so I didn't want to spend a fortune. I went on Amazon and bought a Fender Squire package deal for under $300 which included the electric guitar (which I still have and play 3 years later, my only guitar), a small amp, strap, case, plectrums, tuner, and How-To DVD (which I've never looked at, lol). It was a great deal on a decent guitar and a few necessary supplies. Later on, I got the strings changed to better quality, got the pick guard changed to one of my preference (paisley print), got a new strap to my liking (paisley, to match the guard), and a new case (with shoulder straps).
When I shopped for my base, I knew I wanted a Fender. My music teacher recommended a Mexican-made Fender Jazz bass, so that's what I got, and am super happy with it!

Re: Can anyone recommend a good e-guitar
For some reason, I prefer maple fretboards on my Strats and rosewood on my Les Pauls. Not sure if this is a cosmetic or tone thing.
I have swapped out pickups, dials and internal electronics on some of my guitars, particularly locking tuners. It is not that difficult.
When I buy guitars, I go more on the feel and the sound than on the name on the headstock. In recent years, anything above $700 is likely to be a great guitar and the law of diminishing returns dictates that an increase in price is not likely to result in a similar increase in "quality."
Take a look at this. They do lots of comparisons of most expensive squire/epiphone v, cheapest fender/Gibson. Well worth a look:

I have a Peavey JF-1 semi-acoustic/hollow body in sunburst... was not expensive, cost me $300 in Fort Mac if I remember correctly. Nice guitar though, I like it a lot.
My laptop's playing up, I can't seem to post a link but Google will get it up for you.

Re: Can anyone recommend a good e-guitar
So, how do people play - stood up, sat down, or both?
I do both but find the transition between each difficult. I get that the received wisdom is to have the guitar saddled between one's legs when sitting down so that it is in the correct position when standing up, but I have it side saddle when sitting down.

I picked up a pock rock effect thing last week off EBay $29. It's great, I can plug my iPhone in and play along to any songs I have or want from YouTube. It has many effects too, and a drum pattern set up, all ends up in the amp.

Re: Can anyone recommend a good e-guitar
I always play my guitar sitting down, and I think in any unusual position where the guitar rests on my left thigh (most videos I've seen show the guitar on the right thigh, but that's not comfy for me).
I play electric bass both sitting and standing. I don't have to look at the fretboard as much on bass, so easier to play standing up than the guitar.
