Butter/smoked salmon and border control
My mum is coming over to visit for Christmas. I asked her to bring over butter and smoked salmon. From reading CBSA site, I think these are ok once she declares them, but would hate for her to have a negative experience as she is a little older. Has anyone else brought this through customs and was there any problems? Thanks

There is a $20 limit on dairy products unless you want to pay exorbitant duty rates over the $20 limit. The fish will be ok. Make sure all products are in their original packages and commercially packed and identifiable.

Novocastrian - you would think, but cannot find decent stuff (not frozen) in St John's apart from a hit and miss supply in Costco..... any recommendations?

I can't recall seeing unfrozen smoked salmon in the major grocery stores, you might try the fish depot on duckworth st but most of his stuff is frozen. Belbins grocery might be worth trying also. For my part the frozen stuff has always served its purpose. Quite puzzled why you would need to bring butter over from uk though?

And assuming the officer you get cares. Although at airports maybe they are stricter?
By land nobody seems to care but then they would have like every car crossing inside paying....lol

I know Tootle will kill me for derailing yet again but.... forget stuff that you can get here..butter is butter! Salmon is, well... as Oink knows, salmon, normally quite large here apparently!
Get her to fill the whole suitcase with something that is both heaven to eat, not easy to get apart from at ridiculous prices in "British shops" - and is also light but a delicious cheesy treat. Cheesy wotsits and Quavers- heaven sent food, made by the Gods (ok Walkers.. but I would scoff the lot!)

I think I want to bring up the subject of mince.
Minced beef here in the UK is total crap. It's is literally "minced", extruded into inedible tubes of grizzly abomination.
It's a compelling motive to become vegetarian.

That would be akin to cutting ones throat living in France though... How could you suggest such sacrilege ??!! You need to cross the Channel to culinary heaven ASAP!
